However, Volquest.com has learned that things changed the weekend of the SEC Tournament in Atlanta when Hamilton and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive met. It's our understanding that it was in that meeting it was spelled out what the expected punishment would be with Pearl continuing as the head coach and what they would be if Pearl was not the head coach.

It was, we are told, more or less indicated during the meeting in Atlanta that to move forward with Pearl and his staff would likely result in a crippling blow to the men's basketball program.

Not having Pearl on the sidelines could also be a crippling blow. This is the obvious choice, but lets not think for a minute that Tennessee hoops is in great shape after today.

Yeah. You know, that pesky NCAA and giving Pearl a two year show clause.

There is less of a chance of being crippled with Pearl gone and us being able to replace him, instead of getting bent over by the NCAA.

Agreed.

The lesser of two evils was chosen. If the right hire is made we might come out of this mess okay, if the wrong hire is made.... yikes.

This is most likely true. As much as I hate Slive I think he was trying to do us a favor with the 8 game suspension, keep the NCAA at bay and ease the blow. Slive then found out later that wasn't going to happen and warned MH which leads us to today. Like it or not Slive is not the bad guy in all of this.

I just hope the Big 10 cheif has to have the same conversation with tOSU...

Who would want to come here with all that is hanging over the program?!?! It is not as good a job (to outsiders) as we like to think it is, and that is just a fact. Another Pearl that will endorse UT tradition as he did will be hard to find. IMO

Depending on how the university and MH handle this the basketball program could move on just fine. Its all about who they hire and the damage control with the current roster.
