I swear it's like you're talking to different people altogether depending on whether the subject is football or basketball. When you guys talk about football, you're rabidly defensive of any slights against your team (like any good SEC team should be, LSU included). But when you discuss basketball, everyone takes a calmer, more introspective demeanor. You objectively discuss pros and cons of your teams versus others, with very little smack talk involved. What is it about Vols basketball that calms everyone's nerves? (Apart from the fact that your basketball team has had a much better winning percentage this year than the football team did, which might make everyone relax a little.)

No smack talk here, just an objective observation.

Funny enough I checked a couple of LSU boards today and its just about the same. People talking normally about why or why not they're going to win, having normal conversations. No rabid smack talk like during football season.

I think the difference is if you lose one game in basketball, it doesn't matter too much, if you lose one in football, your season is over. (assuming you're a national title contending program, unlike South Carolina).

Here's my take:

Football is August-January. March Madness is, of course, in March. I'm as "All-Vol" as it gets, and anything that keeps the juices flowing year-round works for me. I've seen almost every home BB game, and I've had a blast. . . .from the pre-game on the strip, to the games, to the post-game discussion and excitement. The idea of being able to only get up for one sport is absurd. I can't speak for the rest of this crowd, but as for me, all is good in Vol-land right now. I'm looking at the prospect of a tourney run and a great turnaround this fall for the football team. If that happens, this could be one of the greatest years in Vol history.

Well, we don't expect near as much from basketball as football. I am a volunteer through and through, but when you go through Wade Houston, Kevin O'Neil, Jerry Green, and Buzz, you kind of lower your expectations.

Another point is that losses hurt so much more in football than in basketball. 1 or 2 losses can ruin a season in football. In basketball, it takes alot more.

Just my two cents.

OK, the ancient one weighs in: I think the difference can be found in the disparity of success of the football vs. the basketball programs. We've had marginal success in basketball, while we've had exceptional success in football, especially when considering the last 15 years or so.

Now, since we're discussing this topic on the Internet, which by its very nature lends itself to a younger demography, that too explains in part why Vols on Internet message boards are more emotional about their football than basketball.

A good number of posters do not remember the glory days of the Ernie and Bernie Show. Their knowledge of Ray Mears is from what they’ve heard or read, and many probably know much more about him after Coach Pearl has resurrected his enormous contributions through some of his tactics.

Our football program is #8 all-time in win percentage. I doubt any member of this board could even tell you where we rank in basketball without doing some research on the subject.

I compare the difference like this. If you were to tell me that I had to exist for the rest of my life on 1 of 2 food groups, vegetables or pizza (what, you didn’t know pizza was a food group?), I’d miss the vegetables but I can live without them. Pizza on the other hand is the world’s most perfect food. I could exist without broccoli, but don’t mess with my extra cheese.

I dare say at least 90% of the Vol Nation feels the same about football.

Agree with OldVol.

Its all about expectations. We expect to compete in football for the SEC Championship and hopefully higher. Bball we are just happy to have a winning record and hopefully make any tournament. We expect our football team to do better and when they don't the fans both get upset amongst ourselves and defend against other fans. This was a year of alot of upset stomachs for football and no good excuses. Just sucked both on and off the field. Lost potential stings bad. Just like family we fight internally but defend against the same type comment from any other group.

Bball this year started with low expectations and cautious optimism now at the end of the season rewarded with success. We are happy for the Bball Vols and take it with less fever because we aren't used to having this kind of success on the hardcourt. Next year expectations will be higher and I think you will see more high pitched posting. Not as high as football. Some more years before that can happen if ever.

That means I'm a minority in Vol Nation.

Good thing there's an open door policy on minority opinion here.
We'd hate to lose yours....

Alot has to do with scheduling as well. There are only 11-13 games in football, so there is an astronomical amount of pressure to win and win quick. There is only one, maybe two chances to bounce back from a loss and post a good season. For national powerhouse programs, 2 losses are all you can afford. Number 3, and your season is a bust. In BBall and Diamond Ball, you have a much longer season and can absorb 5+ losses, make the national tourney and turn in a great year. So, go the fans. We are much more frantic and defensive, and critical, and fanatical during the short season

2) I think your (Atreus) observation is correct but not unique to UT.

That's true, but I still think it's more unique to UT than it is to LSU. Roundabout my side of the earth, if Brady sneezes without covering his mouth there are morons calling for his head and other necessary anatomical protrusions. I suppose we're just touchier. Who knows.

We did that a few times around UT too in the last few years. Now we got one we want to keep.

It'd be simpler if Brady was more consistent at ANYTHING. I mean, this is the gibbering voice of public opinion among LSU BB fans:

"Grr don't like brady we probably should drop him grumble grunt HE WON HE WON HE WON He's the second coming of christ he's the nick saban of basketball all hail to John Bra-HE LOST kill him destroy death maim get rid of the loser he sucks he'll always suck Oh great, SEC regular season championship he's the second coming of christ how wrong we were to doubt him boy we've learned our lesson HE LOST in the final four. Feed him to the dogs."

Repeat as necessary.

Football fans are spoiled
Basketball fans are not there yet.

Take a look again in 5 years if Pearl is averaging 20+ wins a year and you'll see something closer to the football discussions.

Naw, no fear. I'm the understanding type, and even good fans are allowed to throw temper tantrums after a rotten loss. I suppose the premise I made hinged on the condition that the fans must not have just suffered a loss. I mean, c'mon. It just feels got to bitch sometimes. I am certainly not immune to that. (This is why I didn't post here after the football loss to you guys. Would've made an ass of myself.)

Admittedly, tho, the fans calling for Pearl's head do annoy me.

Should have posted. Everyone else has made an ass of themselves here at some point. LOL

I know the point you were making, and it's a valid one, indeed.
