Knight, Alford and Smart. Fabulous win for a team that had no business winning a title. I loved it. Only guy in my house pulling for the Hoosiers.

As an aside, Smart had some serious rise and displayed it on the jumper.

If you want a good gauge of Bob Knight's genius, look at the starting lineups that night.

Wasn't really old enough to appreciate it until the early 90s, but there were some great ones during that stretch.

93 - Michigan v. UNC: Star-studded...Montross, Webber, Howard, Rose...and the timeout heard 'round the world.
94 - Arkansas v. Duke: Williamson, Hill, Lang, Parks, and Thurman's huge 3.
97 - Arizona v. UK: Big 3 by Epps to send it to OT...Simon, Bibby, Mercer
99 - UCONN v. Duke: Heavyweight clash. El Amin, Hamilton, Moore, Battier, Brand, Maggette, Langdon....awesome game.

Hell, last year's game between Kansas and Memphis was incredible. Chalmers' 3 to send the game to OT was a shot for the ages.

Exactly. The talent differential was enormous. The new 3 line made the difference for the Hoosiers that season.

They replayed this game last night on the Big Ten Network. It was actually the first time I've ever seen it. I jumped out of my chair (almost as high as Smart) when he hit that jumper as if it was live. Oh, how I wish The General was still on the sidelines for IU, just like Jim Boehiem is for Syracuse. Probably would have at least one more of these puppies.

I was fairly young, but I was watching the game when NC State beat Houston on that last second air ball/dunk. That was an exciting game.

Phi Slama Jama was a great nickname for a team.

Phi Slamma Choke Guy Lewis. Letting the air out of the ball in that game absolutely lost them a championship. They keep pouring it on and Valvano is just a good coach today who got a bad break. Lewis' silliness made the man a legend. That NC State didn't have more than 2 guys that would have gotten playing time for Houston. Charles and Wittenberg might have.

Two things:
1. Thurl Bailey and Sidney Lowe were better than Larry Micheaux and Alvin Franklin.
2. The semifinal game between Houston and Louisville might be the most purely entertaining game in college basketball history.

That was without doubt my favorite finals game...Everybody I know was rooting for NCST that game as everyone said they had no chance to beat that team...Never seen a team with more heart than NCST that night....People were saying it was a fluke and that NCST should have never beaten that team...But here is a fact, The following season NCST played almost the same Houston team in a tournament in New york "Can't remember the name" wasn't the NIT but anyways they beat them AGAIN! :good!:
