My first job was with The Kentucky Thoroughblades. I worked in the merchandising department.

The Thoroughblades were an AHL Minor League Hockey Team.

First job was washing dishes and bussing tables at Cracker Barrel in 1975.
Thats if you don't count the summer farm work the 2 years before that.

I was a "customer service sales associate" for Winn-Dixie when I turned 16.

They tricked me, that was a fancy trm for bagger.

But I moved my way up to stocking and then produce.

Turned 18, graduated and went to the Air Force.

When I applied as a cook at J-Wag's bar in Memphis in '78, the last question was, "Do you mind the fact that everybody else here is gay"

Almost by reflex I said, "As long as nobody else cares that I'm straight."

The manager (who I later learned personally accounted for 2/3rds of the local coke intake) cracked up for about 5 minutes. When he finally came out of it, he said, "You're hired."

Three months later I quit when the owner brought in 2 old-fashioned hand-crank short-movie-for-a-quarter machines. One had lots of elongated vegetables on it. The other had a doberman on one side and a german shepherd on the other. There were other changes too, but those were the highlights. The crowd suddenly changed overnight.

I didn't show up the next day, and hereafter have remained a certain definition of virgin.... Both the common and Bill Clinton definitions.

First job bagging groceries at the army base commisary in Amberg, Germany so I could buy my first Boom box. Many bagging and stocking selves followed that before coming back to Knoxville to go to UT.

Delivered pizzas for a now defunct place called Checker's. Personally witnessed other employees unrinate on cooked pizzas before delivering them. I never saw anyone choke the chicken on one but I heard it happened at a Red Geranium accross the road, which was bought out by Mr. Gatti's.

I worked at Putt-Putt -- behind the counter, working on video games, cleaning, and . . . . PARTY CAPTAIN!!! It also involved a fair amount of "goofing-off" . . . . so don't ever play me at the original SteetFigher.

Best thing to do is never ever complain about anything at a restaurant and always tip well if you plan to return. Otherwise there is a good change you will at least get a lung booger in your food.

Bagging groceries at the White Store close to Fulton at 65 cents an hour. Could that really have been 46 years ago?

That sounds like the stuff I had to do at home (i.e. chores).
