lets face it...tennessee is in a hole when recruiting starts every year because of the lack of D-1 players here...we hit it hard for skill players about every 2 years and we have years like this that we go after ol and dl and that is not going to get you alot of high rankings....we are in the final few for some very good players

how about instead of a smart-a response why don't you actually come up with reasoning, about why once every 3 years we fall flat on our face?

Okay here goes:

Those precious Rivals and Scouts rankings miss on their patented little star rankings a lot. Patrick Willis lightly recruited 3 star guy? Yeah he was a 2 time SEC Defensive Player of the Year and a Pro Bowl LB his rookie year. Meanwhile, that 4 star guy that got all kinds of props that same year, Daniel Brooks, fought his way out of a scholarship. Patrick Turner, that badass 5 star guy from Nashville, got outplayed this year by Austin Rogers.

Tennessee can't just travel an hour down the road and pick up the athletes that UF and UGA can. It's hard to pull talented athletes away from schools they cheer for their entire lives.

Tennessee is deep at the WR and RB positions, you know the positions that get all those fancy stars that capture your imagination. There really isn't a need for another TB or WR on this team when scholarships are limited.

It has always been cyclical for Tennessee because of these reasons. Recruiting out of state guys is a huge boom or bust business. Sometimes you hit, the majority of times you bust. Tennessee can't cover that up by offering a highly talented guy a scholarship in their own backyard like UGA, USC or UF can.

And another thing, Tennessee hasn't won a SECC since 1998. They haven't really impressed in their bowl games. This all has negative effects on recruiting as well. UF and UGA are the teams that win the SECCs now in the East. Winning will cure a lot of things.

Actually just because there is a Diamond in the rough, does not mean that every 2 and 3-star pan out. We are about to find that out since we had two 4-star talents in a car, get in trouble for marijuana poss. The main reasons these precious little services are wrong, because they evaluate talent and future abilities, not whether a guy is getting into fights at an intramural game, smoking pot, or any other trouble with the law.

The final point of Patrick Turner, is not a fair one to the person. He is lined up with 3 other 5* recruits. Sometimes when you have so much talent at the position it is hard to find your spot, ask a certain WR recruit out of Oklahoma, before his junior season.

wouldn't have been very hard to find his spot if he had stayed in state...but it was his choice to go to a talent laden team and get lost in the process...he made his bed.

that o-lineman wa only given a scholly because of his family, he'll never play a down

Never play a down? That might be a bit extreme. He did play in his states All-Star game. He is certainly not seen as big time OL. But we have no idea who he will pan out. He has size and decent athleticism. Remember our OL walk-on from Kingston that played his last 2 years. I am not claiming he is a stud future lock to be a diamond in the rough. But he has the size that if he works hard enough he at least has a chance to develop into something.

While there are logical reasons for us to no expect a high team ranking from Rivals/Scout etc., (lower number of schollies, focus on "non skill" positions, etc.) it is somewhat disconcerting to see us that far behind our key rivals.

However,
1) We still have a few weeks left to close out the class on a positive note. Landing 2-3 stud linemen would make me feel quite a bit better than I do right now.
2) We should get tremendous mileage out of our 2007 class for the next 3 years, and good mileage out of our 2005 next year. Even the 2006 class, which was not highly rated, has produced a number of solid contributors, namely linemen.
3) It will be imperative that next year is a big year, recruiting-wise...

I'm with you I would feel alot better if and when we pull in 3 to 4 DL in this class. That is why in last years class I thought a couple of junior college DL would have really helped.

This happens to Tennessee alot, but it sure doesnt happen to USC or UF or even UGA.

I suggest you petition the legislature to combine high schools in Tn to raise the level of football competition...

In just about every year, Ga will have twice as many 4-5* recruits than Tn. Fl has a greater disparity than that. Part of last year's success was an abnormally good year in Tn HS football.

CPF finds players. UF passed on V Richard... he looks pretty good now. Dan Williams was another... and I don't think UF had a Soph DT play as well as Dan did.

Rankings are helpful and gives us something entertaining to watch for another month after the season ends. Still Foster, a 3*, will probably break UT's career rushing record next season. Denarius Moore got to the field first among the newcomer WR's, a 3* ahead of two 4*'s and 2 5*'s.

USC, UF and even UGA can never leave a 50-mile radius from their campus and land a top-10 class year after year. Try to recruit that way at UT and you're fighting Vanderbilt for fifth place in the East.

It's a wonder that we do as well as we do, given that huge disadvantage. Is there any program in the country that recruits with virtually no in-state base and still wins as much as Tennessee does?

Maybe helpful: 19 of the schools currently ranked ahead of UT on Rivals already have 20+ commits. UT has 10. Fourteen schools ahead of UT currently have a lower "star" average than UT.

Several schools in that group have probably already gotten all the highly ranked recruits they're going to get, for example Colorado with 7 4* players.

Even if all other things were equal... UT would still have a shot at a top 20 class which is pretty decent considering the emphasis. But all other things are not equal. UT will get Morley, Faison, probably Warren, and perhaps still a long shot at Mallet.

If ranked as JUCO's or something, Morley and Warren would have to be 5* players. Both have started at BCS schools.

Let's let it work itself out then see what happens.

As for UT getting players no one else wants... the uncommitted, highly ranked players are still being recruited by top flight schools. They've just been more selective.

Anyone hear about a good Ga OL that might have waited too long for his top two, UGA and FL? A friend said that a 4* from Ga had played his hand too long and both told him they no longer had room.

This is the reality in division we face.(Recruiting Rankings)

UT Florida UGA

2002 2 20 3
2003 18 2 6
2004 11 7 6
2005 4 15 10
2006 23 2 4
2007 3 1 9

I know Zook started late in 2002 and Meyer's first recruiting was 2005.

We are really backed up against a wall every year when we get hit hard like this every few years. We really fall behind two divisional opponents.

Here's UF's 2005 class:

Avery Atkins DB 5-11 182 4.4 5.9 Daytona Beach, FL
Kalvin Baker LB 6-1 230 4.5 5.6 Columbus, GA
Nyan Boateng WR 6-2 186 4.5 5.8 Brooklyn, NY
Simon Codrington OL 6-7 270 5.3 5.7 Miami, FL
Jon Demps LB 6-4 225 4.6 5.8 Pensacola, FL
Brian Ellis TE 6-4 235 4.7 5.7 Daytona Beach, FL
Darryl Gresham Jr. LB 6-3 227 4.78 5.7 Roanoke, VA
Eddie Haupt OL 6-4 290 5.19 5.7 Merritt Island, FL
Kestahn Moore RB 5-10 196 4.41 5.7 Mansfield, TX
Dorian Munroe DB 6-0 180 4.5 5.8 Miami, FL
Louis Murphy WR 6-3 176 4.54 5.7 St. Petersburg, FL
David Nelson WR 6-5 195 4.5 5.8 Wichita Falls, TX
Reggie Nelson DB 6-0 189 4.4 - Coffeyville, KS
Jonathan Phillips K 6-1 200 - 5.4 West Palm Beach, FL
Josh Portis QB 6-3 183 4.57 5.9 Woodland Hills, CA
Eric Sledge ATH 6-2 180 4.59 5.7 Apopka, FL
Ryan Stamper LB 6-2 215 4.6 5.8 Jacksonville, FL
Ronnie Wilson OL 6-4 331 5.4 5.7 Pompano Beach, FL

I only see 3 contributors in there. Two of them were 3* players coming out of HS.

They got alot more production out of the 2006 class but Pierre-Louis 2*, Brandon James 3*, and Maurice Hurt 3* made bigger impacts than most of the more highly recruited guys they got.

That's my point... I don't think they're the only ones.

A class loaded with 4* and 5* players that don't make it isn't better than a class with well chosen 3* guys that stick and mature in the program.

Exactly. Look at UT's highly rated recruiting classes and see how many of those guys see the field or stick around for 3 seasons.

Malcolm Rawls, Slick Shelley, Raymond Henderson, Heath Benedict, James Banks all of these guys off the top of my head were highly ranked and didn't get to finish here.

Yep. Shelley and Briscoe arrived the same year with about the same build. Josh is looking pretty good comparatively.

I'm also thinking I want CPF to order up a couple more 2* guys like Chris Brown and Elix Wilson. Somehow Brown's 4.75 40 time didn't hurt him too much.

#46
Yeah. From what HV and others have said, CPF seems to like a few guys alot this year that aren't highly rated.
