The issue for me isn't pulling for 2 teams, it's pulling for one team in football and another in basketball. Because in my experiences, 99% of the time the person does it because the school they root for in football isn't very good in basketball.

As a UT and KU fan, I can tell you that my allegiance to UT was formed through my parents (both alums, as well as my Dad's 9 siblings), and my allegiance to KU was formed through being 25 minutes from the Phog.

My Dad took me to KU basketball games because they were KU basketball games and it is a hell of an experience. And, I got into it, and loved KU basketball. I never went to a KU football game until I was in high school, because we spent Saturdays in the fall watching UT play, or making trips to Knoxville and Oak Ridge to go to games. KU football was never a thought growing up (and, it is still hardly a thought to anyone in Lawrence). UT basketball was never on TV in Kansas in the 80s and 90s (aside from a few Allan Houston games), and my Dad never thought making a trip to Knoxville to see a basketball was worth the money. By the way, that KU game I finally went to in high school...felt like an oversized high school game and a sideshow compared to the games I had already been to at Neyland. And, as much as you might hate to hear this, UT basketball games in TBA...well, they feel pretty ridiculous as well when compared to a childhood spent going to games in the Phog.

Were I just in it for the "good team in this sport" and "good team in that sport", I would have hopped off the UT football wagon by now; as would many others in here that get accused of being this type of fan because they are big UNC basketball fans.

I'm talking Alabama football/Kentucky basketball "fans". I've known Tennessee football/Kentucky basketball "fans". I currently know one guy who's an FSU football/UNC basketball "fan", and another who's an Alabama football/Duke basketball "fan". Sorry I don't count those unless you have a REALLY good reason, i.e. you went to both schools or something but even still you need to pick one. And in my experiences, the team they like in football they actively root against in basketball.

There are reasonable exceptions, like you went to school or grew up near a school that doesn't have an FBS football program (i.e. Tennessee Tech) but plays D1 in basketball. That one I can buy, or like I said you went to school at 2 places that have FBS teams.

But most are simply bandwagon fans, and even if you say went to both Tennessee and North Carolina, I would think you'd still root for both and not say hate UNC football or UT basketball.

Me, I can't fathom rooting for UT football and picking another basketball team. It just doesn't make sense to me at all. How can you love the colors, cheers, and fight songs during football season but despise them during basketball season?

I understand and agree.

A couple of guys I work with fit this bill. One is a Oregon football fan, which makes sense since he grew up in Oregon, but he's also a Duke basketball fan. No connection to Duke at all.

The other one is a Bammer during football season and an Indiana fan during basketball. He grew up in Indiana and has only been in Alabama for maybe a year and a half. So he is purely a bandwagon Bammer.

I also have an uncle that lives in Florida and roots for both UF and Miss St. His divided loyalties I can understand since his three kids all went to UF, but he played for and graduated from Miss St.

The first 15 years of my life I grew up right outside of memphis. I have been a Memphis fan since I was 4 but I always pulled for the Vols to. I moved to South Ga when I was seventeen and my blood gets more orange every day. My life now revolves around Tennessee ball, period. I guess with all the success we have had the past 4 years you could call me a bandwagon fan.

You are talking about that rare species known as a "Volcat." A close friend of ours falls in that category but he came by it honestly. He grew up in Kentucky and followed the blue bellied boys religiously in basketball. Like so many of them, he really did not follow college football closely. When he met us, we slowly converted him to Big Orange football but his first allegiance will always be to Kentucky basketball.

You wouldn't fit the type I was referring to; for one you actually have reasons for why you root for who you do and you have actual connections. Plus UT and KU aren't rivals.

I still take issue more with UT football/UNC basketball fans.

my grandfather raised me on Tennessee football before I even knew what I was cheering for. I didn't start watching basketball until I had played for a few years. Due to the way my teams were coached, I hated the idea of a father coaching his son, therefore I hated Wade and Allan Houston. As a pass first white guard, I fell in love with Bobby Hurley. Never knew Duke was going to go on such a 30 year run. I've just enjoyed the ride. For the people that want to nit pick, I just laugh at them for making such a big deal about something so small.

Confused on the concept, lol, but bless your heart! :eek:k:

I think there are some simple rules for sports fans. And they go something like this:
You can be a fan of

1. The school you graduated from or attended as long as you ended out getting a degree (so transfers can count technically)
2. Your family went to said school

If neither of those qualify, then you move on to this

3. The school is either the nearest to you or is within your home state.

After that, it's pretty simple, no multiple schools with exceptions to rules 1 and 2, so if I got a degree at UT and then got my masters at Notre Dame I can still root for both technically.

there's a whole different set of rules for professional teams, but it's pretty much the same just a bit more lenient.

For me, I grew up in Kentucky. My parents both went to UK at some point for education. But a lot of my family lives, or has lived in UT. For most of my life, those two schools have constantly been around me in family discussions. My parents root for the Vols when we aren't playing them, so I do too. I kinda have the same situation. I spent most of my summers growing up in Oklahoma, so I was around people who talked about Oklahoma sports a lot. I cheer them, but don't follow like UT or UK.

To me, it's up to the person. Who cares if someone is bandwagon or not, it's all about enjoying sports.

I'm from California, and I've never been to Tennessee. The only local college I root for is Cal. I can't wait to see rocky top someday.

Again, this I really don't have a problem with, because while you root for 2 teams, you've obviously put UK first as you say you root for UT except when they play UK.

And to clarify I don't really have THAT big of a problem of someone rooting for one team in football and another in basketball, as Lord knows UT basketball didn't offer fans much to cheer about (mostly blame Dickey). The main problem is I've met those that say love UT football and HATE UT basketball, i.e. trash talk against it.

The worst is "fans" (I use that term lightly) who pul for bama in football and Uk in basketball.

I've said this before but I'll say it again (because I hope some day she'll see it somehow), but I dated a girl who is a UK basketball fan, UT football fan (but roots for Bama when they don't play because she "has liked Saban since he was at LSU), and is a Yankees fan. Her mom went to UK, dropped out, dad graduated from UT, and she intends to go to bama this fall in fact.

Never in my life have I met a bigger bandwagon fan. Ever. but she was a hot redhead, so I put up with it.

I really don't have a problem with it. There are no rules on being a fan.

I love Michigan because I have family from there and they've loved Michigan for generations. I love Tennessee because I grew up here and half my family has loved Tennessee for generations. Tennessee comes first when they meet however.

But I also cheer for San Diego State. I grew up there for a few years and always like to see them do well.

The only bad fan to me is one who only likes the "hot" team. I know a guy who switched from Penn State to K-State to Ohio State to Miami back in the 90's through early 2000's (haven't seen his fat ass since 2002, so he has probably switched again). Just riding the jock of the current winning team.

I am a Vol fan. I will always pull for a family member to do well. I am friends with several Vandy football players from the 90's. But I am a Vol fan. Period. Good luck to every other team, but **** 'em all just the same.
