I am going to the Aggie v OSU game this Saturday and aparenntly we will be "retiring"/ "honoring" ACIE Law in Reed Arena. They are going to hang his jersey which will be the very first in all of Aggie Athletics.

With that said, what do yall think about doing this and does Tennesee. I know obviously that UNC and Duke have but we never have for any sport. Im not so sure all of aggie nation is in support of breaking tradition.

On a side note, I think it is crazy awesome that Turgeon was the one that got this going, and he didnt even coach the kid! Awesome guy, both of them imo.

your thoughts?

Tennessee has retired a lot of jerseys.

Helton just got his retired for baseball.

There are 3 or 4 women's basketball players with their jerseys in TBA's rafters.

Bernard King has his jersey retired and Ernie Grunfield's jersey will soon be joining his.

Football there are quite a few.

Football just started doing it recently, usually it was reserved for players who died in WW2, etc.

I try to look at it from both angles. This is become quite the talk of town around here because if this issue. If we start now, is that a slight against former Aggies that have gone on to the pros? As crazy as it sounds some folks are up in arms about this.

What about Dat Ngyen and Reggie McNeal in football, Chuck Knoblaugh in base ball? Are we going to do the same for Joe Jones when he leaves?

Personally I wish they'd kept that tradition. Retiring jerseys is ok but the numbers should be left for those 4 men. Just my :twocents:

Really?

That's funny. They shouldn't be upset.

You missed the Texas v aTm game a few years ago then.
If thats the case than Nate James from Duke should have his number retired because he blew up on WF in 98.

Or Duhon....Or even Scooter Mcfadden had a good game at UT, should he be retired?

I agree Justin, and my point is, why have we just now started this? Why is Turgeon the first to say something?

Tennessee has a set critierion for players' numbers to be retired.

Must be an All-American, won a SEC title and either be a champion in their selective sport or an All-Pro (something along those lines)

It was the turning point for the entire program man and if you cant see that, I dont what to tell you. He changed the dynamics of College Basketball in College Station. We started to fill Reed arena up after "The Shot". Posters of the team, that play, coach G and Aggie B-ball spread like wild fire. Turgeon is quoted in today's paper for saying, "Acie and what he did has helped in recruiting for me and I cant thank him enough". He was the first true leader of the program. Hell.....he is one of the reasons Coach G is at Kentucky. He made that guy look like a genius! So dont tell me it was just one game.

He was just a middle of the road guard. I am glad that it helped you guys in recruiting, although it's not really showing this year. Maybe it will in the future. As for making Billy look like a genius, I think we are all seeing that right now. So, in my opinion, it was just one game.

Out of those 3 players I listed, James, Duhon, McFadden....I would take 2-3 over him all day long. But, good for him to be the first.

We're not getting carried away at all. The comparison is pretty fair imo. And concerning what the state of Aggie B-ball is right now. I'll take 16th in the nation, under the radar 4th seed and possibly in the hunt for 2nd in the confrence. We have a decent rookie post player that was recruited that has contributed to this, so I'd say Acie had a recruiting impact already.

except, nowhere near as good of shooter. Acie was a good player, but lets not get carried away with it.

Not comparing skills.

Acie made made people pay attention to Texas A&M basketball.

Lofton (w/Pearl) made people pay attention to UT basketball.

That was my point. Skill wise there are some distinct diffrences. I dont want to be mis-construed here.

Acie Law never once made me want to watch an Aggie game....And when I did watch them, I just wasnt impressed.

He didn't impress you.

He was on the cover of SI and brought tons of media attention to the Aggies. Not only was he a pretty good player, he left an impact on Aggie Nation.
