New Mississippi State head coach. This guy could be interesting to watch how he does.

I understand why they promoted from within after Leach's death, but feels like Arnett is not ready. I'm a bit surprised they didn't try to bring Dan Mullen back.
He’s totally not ready to be HC I guess they did it to honor Leach. Mullen probaly would’ve came back to Starkville.

It’s the ONLY decision they could make. Signing day is approaching and sensitive nature of timing. When was it going to be ok to start reaching out to candidates?
They definitely have an eye towards signing day. I also doubt they had the wherewithal to conduct a coaching search given what happened.

That'd really be something to bring in a brand new coach from outside the program, who presumably would want to bring in a staff of his guys. Would be an awful, awful look to have the HC die, then have that lead to his staff being let go because they brought in a brand new coach.

More than likely an unpublished one year deal, or less. Signing period coming up fast. Had to resolve an emergency vacancy situation. Could be that MSU comes back after the 2nd signing day, and commences a coaching search.

All that can be contracted in. You got the job, but for the 2023 season you have the incumbent coaches.

It’s been published. 4 years (max allowed in the state of Mississippi), $3 mil per. This isn’t a temporary hire.

Surely under the circumstances, there's an out clause. THen again what does it matter. Very few coaches make a contract w/o quitting or getting fired. Who knows, maybe this Arnett will be a unexpected surprise for them, and they get to put some graceful distance between them and what happened.

Out clause would be a BUYOUT.

They'd probably have an incredibly hard job getting a coach to agree to that.
True.

An incredibly awful situation for MSU to be in right now, aside from and completely repsecting the loss of Leach. I'm sure in what little time they had to deal with the team situation, they made the very best decision they could have for now.

If it was temporary, why do four years? I'm going off the press release.

They're all temporary. The buyout just determines how long it is temporary if you are not successful in the first couple years of the contract.

TBH, MSU probably made the right decision for them right now. The coaching pool is not filled out yet with a coach I would desire to hire in their current situation they were dealt. Just my .02.
