The Lads in Lines have not been friendly at all to our Vols this season. Most of us agree that the reffing has been particularly egregious so far.

Although I am concerned about O-Line, Secondary, etc. - more than anything this Saturday night, I fear that an unfair whistle may tilt this game in the wrong direction.

What do yall think? Are we gonna get a decent whistle against the Gamecocks? Or will SC jr be allowed to hold, grab and run amok like our other opponents?

I think you already know the answer.

Here's another thought. I'm beginning to think that the officials absolutely hate our up-tempo offense because it puts a ton of stress on them trying to accommodate our pace. The solution?...start slinging the laundry, accidentally kick a football (yeah right), etc. in order to slow the game down to something they can manage. Not stating it as a fact, just a random thought.

Logically, we were much, much faster last year and none of what you're suggesting happened.

So you're suggesting THIS year, when we're much slower, they feel the need to slow us down. That makes no sense.

We averaged 73.9 plays per game last year. We're averaging 73 plays per game this year. Not much difference. With the new clock rules which should cut plays per game, it looks like we're actually trying to go faster. I would contend that it looks like we're going slower because our rhythm keeps getting disrupted for a variety of reasons.

I just figured they were getting paid by the hour. Up tempo cuts into their paycheck. Probably should have done the blue font thing.

Going after the refs as "corrupt" is among the weakest of excuses for our own inefficient, foot shooting offense.

They miss calls. It happens. Always has and always will. If you truly believe it's WWE, why watch unless you just want to be entertained?

If that's what you believe, you're wasting your time watching college football and expecting it not to be rigged.

Spoiler alert: it's not rigged. The refs don't hate us. ESPN doesn't hate us. It's a game played by imperfect players and reffed by imperfect refs.

I didn't say they were corrupt. I didn't say they weren't. I didn't state anything as if it was a fact. I'm simply throwing a hypothetical out for discussion. Yes, refs miss calls. Yes, officials are human and carry inherent biases with them regarding what they see or don't see and yes, up tempo offenses create stress on officiating crews just like it creates stress on an opposing defense.

Here's an article that alludes to the impact of up-tempo offenses on officiating crews. Feel free to read and draw your own conclusions, or get back to whining about Milton, the offensive line, the defense, and the play calling. It really makes me no difference.
That talks about it being difficult for them, not corrupt. DIFFICULT. And how they try to cope with it.

The implication that officials "go after" TN or any team is weak. Very weak.

Sorry but I don’t buy “refs make mistakes” crap anymore.

They’re simply trying to make it about themselves.

The biggest problem with officials is that they are part-time employees. The SEC has enough money to employ the crews full-time and have them prepare like professionals. In a billion dollar industry, the officiating has not kept up with the level of the rest of the sport. Those crews should be assigned film study, targeted training, and know what to look for more than what they get. They aren’t prepared well and it’s not entirely their fault.

Good for you. So you're just watching for entertainment value and don't take the results seriously, eh?

That's a strategy. Like watching wrasslin', I guess.

The calls that were missed against AUP, Florida, and UTSA were so atrocious.

They need to be held accountable and people need to stop making excuses for their screw ups.

I agree. What's happened is the level of play has gone beyond the days when an insurance salesman could be a really good SEC official.

The NCAA, however, can't have the B1G and SEC using professional refs and the other leagues, like the MAC or Southern, using amateurs.

That just heightens the chance of getting sued that they're running a pro league.

Again, if you believe it's corrupt, the outcome is fixed, then you shouldn't care so much. It's just entertainment and not really a legit contest.

If that's what you believe, fine, but own it like a man.

If there is a problem, I think you just hit on it. It's completely lazy to chalk everything up to corruption. But these are part time professionals between about 40-60 years old in most cases trying to judge something moving just slightly slower than the NFL. It's just not an easy thing to do as a side gig.

I can't in all honesty say that the officiating is the cause of the bad performance we have seen so its not a we lost or did poorly during this portion of game X because of the stripes, BUT to say the calls and lack of calls haven't been egregiously bad and very one side would be to watch the game blind folded.

I say we should pelt them with mustard/water bottles and golf balls. That should warm up the friendship
