Transfer doesn't necessarily mean rental. Why would a transfer have to be, or necessarily be, a one-year player?
It doesn't
I'm just saying that depending entirely on the transfer portal for your QBs is a dangerous dangerous game.
Face it, college offenses aren't getting any simpler and it's almost like the first year at a school for any QB is at best decent. Second year are kind of when it all starts clicking seemingly for both transfer and HS recruit QBs.
Transfers, you maybe get one good year. HS recruits-you should get two. This of course assumes that the players are up to snuff in the first place and not a Harrison Bailey creation of the other players around them.
Just in five years or so-best examples I can come up with are Joe Burrow and Hendon Hooker. Hook was pretty good in 21, but his second year in Heupels system is when it all came together-and he is in my estimation a fairly bright and eager guy.
Hell, Hookers 21 season was probably better than Burrows 2018 season. He stepped it up in 2019 and the rest in history.
Only one year rental I can even keep up with who has panned out has been Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma-and that was primarily because he plays a "very unusual" game.
I suppose that in many ways, would just boil down to how big of risk taker you are doesn't it? I play quite a bit of chess. I know I make some very risky moves with a rook that I would not do with a queen (more valuable piece). A punter-yeah go for it, but your QB? Different story.
