Dooley's recruiting wasn't as bad as you think.

The biggest mistake Dooley ever made is that one year he did not recruit one offensive lineman and we are paying for it now.

His recruiting was so good that in one recruiting cycle he didn't bring in an OL. His recruiting was so good that he burned bridges with TN high school coaches - likely costing us Jalen Ramsey and Von Bell.

Dooley was an abject failure as a head coach and ambassador of this program. If you want to defend him, then start www.islurpdooley.com. Neither you nor he will get quarter here.

Big differences b/t Dools and CBJ. Its about aura and attitude. Just follow what recruits have to say about Butch. I don't recall many positive words about Doodoo-ley.

In 2010 Dooley signed 8 players currently on NFL rosters. These include Justin Hunter, James Stone, Mychal Rivera, Jawuan James, Da'Rick Rogers, Zach Fulton, Matt Sims, and Tyler Bray. Rajion Neal was recently cut by Green Bay. In 2011 Dooley signed A.J. Johnson, Curt Maggitt, Brian Randolph, Jordan Williams, and Antonio Richardson. In 2012 he signed Jason Croom, Alton Howard, Latroy Lewis, and 2 current NFL players Daniel McCullers and Cordarrelle Patterson. Granted numerous players over Dooley's 3 years didn't live up to expectations, but that happens in a lot of college programs.

8/3 = 2.6 players a year and two of those were one and done.... About 30-40 players are needed to play ever game and you r only as strong as the weakest link... Dooley had a few good men but did not recruit to properly field a good team

The lineman that grew up a VOL's fan will be going against us Saturday.. We were holding a spot for Bonner.. Dooley should have gotten the lead in Dumb and Dumber 2

I had a dream the other night that I went out drinking with Dooley. we discussed bamboo farming at length

So you are wearing eye patch because Dooley gave you a black eye in your dream? And your other dream fetish is to be a russian dictator?

because he probably does not see the world as black and white as you do. it's perfectly reasonable to highlight some things that dooley (or anybody) did well even if he overall failed. Dooley did a very good job recruiting and building a great offense, but did a subpar job recruiting defense (and hired a wrong dc in sal) which is why he ended up failing.

Yes and though it's impossible to verify at this point, I think it's safe to say that if Dooley had been retained for the 2013 season that our 2014 class would have looked much different. I think that would have meant...

Derek Barnett to Ohio State or maybe Vanderbilt
Dewayne Hendrix to Missouri
Jalen Hurd to Ohio State or Florida
Josh Malone to Georgia or Clemson
Cortez McDowell to Auburn
Todd Kelly Jr to Alabama

He signed with Dools first class but credit goes to Kiffy boy since he recruited him the majority of the time he was here. Same goes for Hunter. Hunter and Da rick was going to be NSD surprises for Kiffins staff

He asked "What roster is Da Rick on" He means what NFL roster is he on now!!!!

Since his DUI, he is on no NFL team. He messed up in college so Buffalo gave him a free agent try out but he was uninspired. Indy gave him a shot and he did well in that one season but in season # 2, he got a DUI and was not worth the headache.
If you haven't noticed, Indy doesn't play around when a player makes a mistake with the law. They cut them... DUI, domestic violence, resisting arrest, etc. etc.

Yes but the attrition suffered with Dooley recruits was the worst I've ever seen. Out of 50 players recruited during 11,12 ( his 2 true classes) 20 players didn't make it to their Soph yr. that's a lot. Dools was living on scraps for the most part, which you should never have to do at TN. GBO!

I think the "Jones inherited a train wreck" arguments go too far as well. However, Dooley did not leave a full boat. He did leave some good players but not enough of them and his recruiting was disjointed. The fact that he didn't sign a single OL in '12 more than likely cost UT wins this year.

Too many use the excuse that "nothing was left". But there were enough roster holes to make the rebuilding difficult.

I continue to hope that Jones is making investments that will start to pay dividends in '15 and beyond. But frankly some of the losses like Mizzou, UF, and Vandy make that HOPE more difficult to sustain. IMO, those were coaching losses... not player losses.

But according to the sunshine sheep butch only had high school talent for him to coach

Feel free to list the NFL talent left by Dooley outside of a couple of olineman who were having to learn yet another offensive system. I will hang up and listen.

It's a mistake in thinking that signing a few high quality player makes you a good recruiter. You can't just sign great WRs and be considered a decent recruiter. You have to sign quality players and address all positions with at the very least decent ones. Dooley signed some great players but he didn't address needs at several positions. He also would take a four star player that everyone had basically passed on. His classes were overranked by the recruiting services because sure they had some highly rated players but he didn't fill positional needs and he took players that other major programs took a pass on. Add to it that some of his players had attitude or maturity issues.

He also alienated several high school coaches at prominent high school programs. Dooley was an absolute disaster as a recruiter and HC.

What the hell is the point of this thread--nostalgia for the man who did something no other coach in U.T. history achieved--three back to back losing seasons? (which should not have surprised, considering his resume, which he lived down to).

p.s.: he deserve at least half-credit for the losing season that followed his disastrous tenure.

Top 25 classes are good for the ACC, but SEC teams almost require top ten classes to be competitive.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. He stunk. Ask Highschool coaches around the state if they were encouraging kids to talk to UT during Doolittle's tenure.

What are you blabbering about? Last time I checked, every college coach has HS talent to develop. Sometimes that HS talent is good, sometimes that HS talent is not very good. I guarantee you playing a bunch of college freshmen is not a recipe for success.
