Final Top 25

I'm curious how often a 12-loss team that didn't even win its own conference ended up ranked #3 in the nation.
Because college athletics rarely make any sense and that’s the only sense in it you will find

Up until this season, the last AP Top 25 poll was announced after the end of the regular season, after the final conference tournament championships and Selection Sunday. The final poll had not factored in performances from the NCAA Tournament.

“While the tournaments decide the national champions, they don’t determine where all the other teams stack up following the post-season action,” said Barry Bedlan, AP’s director of sports products. “We believe the end-of-season poll will help satisfy fan demands, play into off-season conversations, and, frankly, give some teams bragging rights over others.”

Having the final AP poll before the tournaments has merits. Too much emphasis can be put in a single game. Also, are the NCAAT invitees going to be 1-68 and then the NIT teams begin with #69?

It’s been like football bowl games before 1960 or whenever but for different reasons. Football bowl games used to be more like party time for players after successful seasons. Other than the NY Day games, not a whole lot of them were even on TV. Now football is reverting back to meaningless bowl games with the best players opting out.

I do not like Bama either. But they did end up in the final four this year.
I believe they had a better region and if UT was in that region the Vols would have been in the final four, just the luck of the draw. Vols beat them twice including once on their court.

Duke at 9 is a joke too. Beat a 13 seed, a 12, #1 Houston by 3 without their best player for 2/3 of the game and 11 seeded NC State. Always overseeded.

Seems all Vol sports are doing really well. Men's basketball one of elite teams...win reg season sec title. Football still up there...baseball ranked #4...softball top 5...women's basketball not where they wanna be but making changes to get there. Only thing is not being the dominate team in any sport...but still consistently challenging for the top spot in so many.

The tournament has nothing to do with the full body of work over the entire season. The tournament has more to do with your draw and if you can get hot for several games in a row. Anybody that thinks Bama was better than Tennessee over the course of the whole year hasn’t been paying attention.
Actually the tournament is everything in college basketball and where you finish in it should matter. A great year is to be at least one of the final 4 teams. Do you think NC State supporters think they had a bad year because the regular season record was not that good ? No they think they had a great year with a final 4 appearance.

The AP RARELY releases a final poll. Some of those rankings you are referencing are final REGULAR season polls.
I don't believe Tennessee has ever finished #5 in the Coaches or AP after the tournament until THIS YEAR.

No idea why the AP decided to post a post-season version this year.
To aggravate UT fans

Their casual supporters. Yeah, the made a final four, but it wasn't a "great" year by any reasonable metric.

"This is the first time the Associated Press has released a year-end poll after the NCAA Tournament, as the final poll from 1948-49 through 2022-23 came beforehand."

Not since 1949.
