Spurrier to receive Neyland award

I respect Spurrier, and think he is a great coach and did lots of great things for the sport.....I would not boo him but this makes me shake my head a little bit.

I am not convinced he should get the General Neyland Award. I would think that it would be for a Tennessee Volunteer, not just a guy who happened to be from Tennessee.

A quick google search does not show an explanation for the award, so who knows. If anybody finds an explanation of the award then please post. I think that may provide some explanation.

They should introduce him as "failed NFL coach Steve Spurrier". Actually though I've always found I respect his game. Hate of course always for all things Gator, but like Aldous Snow said, it's a respectful hate for him.

I do hope they don't get all buddy-buddy...needs to be a roast with insults flying both ways. Otherwise it's like a WWE HOF ceremony where all the wrassler's "hated enemies" get up and talk about how much they love him and blah blah blah.

Before everyone gets mad about it, remember our two close wins over him at South Carolina essentially made Butch Jones career at Tennessee. We also beat him his last game in The Swamp. (Edit: Someone already pointed this out, but I'd like to add that we wouldn't have won those USC games if Spurrier's team hadn't been so out of shape. Spurrier was like the David Wells of coaches.)

Neyland Trophy |

found this link - if it's legit, quite aptly explains the award. Looking at past recipients, there are various nemeses throughout the trophy's history. TOBC (S if you prefer) fits as well as any of the others.

Nice find! Thanks

I guess it makes a lot more sense now.

If it has been awarded to bear bryant then hell I guess we can give it to anybody!

I guess it is a nice gesture for us to give the o.b.s. an award named after our legend.

GBO!

Please stop the hate. He has been great for the game, great for the SEC, stepped down when he knew he was done. Yes I know all the "he quit" haters will flock to that one but he is a legend, and most of the time people don't like to ask legends to leave. He could have stayed for another two, three or four years cashing the checks and they probably wouldn't have done anything.

Respect for your opponents is something that is lost on people nowadays. He came in here and kicked our butts more times than we all care for, but at then end of the day he helped to grow the game both as a player and a coach. He not only deserves respect, he has earned it. Sure, he ran his mouth a few times but he almost always 1) backed it up, and 2) was never out of line with his comments. He was emotional in his comments a lot of the time, but I can't recall a time when he crossed the line.

He has my respect and college football and the SEC would be best served if he could coach forever in his prime.

Well said. I miss the guy, hated him when he was in Gainesville as much as anybody, but developed
quite an appreciation for him during his stint in Columbia. There will never be another like him,
thats for sure.

Spurrier receiving the Neyland Award is like Hitler being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, dude hates Tennessee. :crazy:Ruth's Chris is the biggest rip-off in the restaurant biz, you're better off buying a prime cut from the supermarket and grilling it yourself. Helluva lot better and much cheaper !

Ruth's Chris is the best. So the rest of your argument is crapola. :hi:

Totally disagree, that place is way over priced, $52 for an at best average T- Bone steak is ridiculous. Thought the beef was Iowa prime aged it was far from it. A fool and his money are soon parted.

So, you glorify people who are a-holes for no reason and are constantly looking for the media spotlight. Got it.

Fishing for likes I see. You must be a part of the generation that gets offended by everything someone says. He wouldn't an a-hole. The man was funny. Go watch tennis or something if you get that bent out if shape. At times he made me mad but after a while I could laugh at what he said. He's a legend to college football whether you like it or not

Spurrier will get booed long and loud in Neyland. UT has been the punchline of his barbs for decades. He even had to get a few shots in at media days last year. He has poked fun at every UT coach he coached against, and some of his digs have been quite mean-spirited.

This is going to generate more negative publicity for UT. Fans will boo and heckle him, and the media will capture it all and spin it to make UT look bad.

The man, at the time of his leaving, was the best coach 3 different programs have ever had. He is a world class coach. His ripping UT was all in good fun. He and CPF have a good relationship. People *****ing about this are the same that claim every media outlet hastes us.

And we should be made fun of. The QB club made the decision to honor him, he is clearly deserving based on his track record, oh and we are really booing because quite frankly he owned us.

The only thing that could redeem this decision would be to throw the award into the brick wall and have security escort him out of the stadium.

He won't be booed because he beat UT back in the 90s. He'll be booed because he doesn't like UT and has seldom missed an opportunity to belittle UT. He'll be about as welcome in Neyland as Kiffin.

I'm just trying to figure out how you get 60,000+ VOL fans to not boo when he is announced. I just don't see how the crowd reaction will turn out well.

Lets be honest, If we don't boo he'll be disappointed...Spurrier loves playing the bad guy.

Your attempt to change my mind is a big FAIL. I know what I like, sport. :whistling:
