Miami, FL high school Northwestern is known to be a hot recruiting bed. Every year talent pours out of its doors onto the gridiron with college coaches fighting to land the best players. In the 2011 class there is an athlete being recruited by almost all the big name schools in the college football scene. Teddy Bridgewater, a 6’3 170 pound Dual-Threat QB is the next star in the making for Northwestern.
When asked to describe himself in one word Bridgewater came up with an interesting answer.
“I’d say freakish. I am a freak with the ball. I can make guys miss when it looks like I was going to be tackled. I am awesome with the ball in my hands. I just love making plays happen,” says Bridgewater.
While Bridgewater has a high level of confidence in himself he has found a way to stay humble.
“I try not to say I can do this really well and I am really good at that. I just need to keep getting better. There are lots of little things you can always improve on. For me I need to keep getting better at reading defenses while I am on my drop-back, figuring out what a defense is going to do within the box, and when I am at Quarterback I need to learn to not squeeze the ball so hard while throwing it,” says Bridgewater.
One of the ways Bridgewater has been able to improve his skills has been going on the camp circuit. He recently completed the Friday Night Lights camp at Florida and felt he stacked up well against the level of talent on hand.
“I went to the camp to just have fun and learn from the staff. Work on my game against the nation’s best talent. The camp is filled with great players and I just wanted to see how I stacked up. I did really well and I really enjoyed it. I also got a chance to check out the Florida campus and facilities and that was really cool. I really enjoyed my time while I was at Florida,” says Bridgewater.
While going to the camp circuit Bridgewater has also been working hard in the classroom.
“I plan on graduating high school early as a senior so I’ve been taking summer classes working hard to get ahead and stay on track academic wise. I want to get to a school in the winter or early spring so I am there in time for spring workouts and get an early jump on things,” says Bridgewater.
With such a busy summer and workload Bridgewater has started to see early scholarship offers pour in and has an idea on a few schools that have offered while also hoping to hear from some others.
“Right now I have offers from Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, FIU, and my hometown Miami. I also think Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon, and Alabama are close to offering. I’d like to hear more from Georgia and Alabama because they just started coming at me,” says the talented signal caller.
With an already impressive offer list Bridgewater gave an idea of what he is looking for early in his recruiting process.
“Right now I am looking at the academics of the school. I want to get a good education. I also am looking at how many players are in the NFL and how many have been in the league in the past. A school who has a good chance of getting me to the NFL will help. I also will check out the depth chart at my position. I want to see who is ahead of me when I’d get there and how quickly I could see the field. Most importantly I want to play in the East Coast or the SEC,” says Bridgewater.
With an early offer from Tennessee Bridgewater went into detail about what interests him in the Vols program and how they currently stand.
“I am very interested in Tennessee. The school side of Tennessee is something I am interested in. I like the fact that they are a young team who are looking to make things better over there. I could fit in well there. I also love the fact that Peyton Manning went to school there. I really like Manning and I think I could be like him in a way if I went to Tennessee,” explained Bridgewater.
Bridgewater also gave some insight on his thoughts towards a few other schools.
“I really liked Florida when I was at FNL. I grew up actually liking Florida which is surprising I know since my hometown team is Miami. Alabama is a school with a great tradition and Nick Saban. Miami is my hometown school and I know a lot of guys from school who go there. Any school in the SEC I am interested in basically. I love the SEC, it’s the best conference in the nation and I want to play with the best,” explained Bridgewater.
While schools are looking at Bridgewater as a Dual-Threat QB he also shed some light on his favorite position.
“I actually like playing Wide Receiver more than I do Quarterback. I like getting out into open space and just making guys miss. So I’d love to try and play Wide Receiver as well if I could, but we will see what happens,” admitted Bridgewater.
While Bridgewater has seen some impressive schools come calling he already knows the date he will be announcing his college choice.
“ I am going to announce my choice on my birthday which is November 10th. Right now though I am totally open to all schools. I have no favorites at this time. I am just looking for schools on the east coast and going from there,” says Bridgewater.
VolNation.com would like to thank Teddy for his time for the interview and would also like to wish him good luck in the upcoming season.
