in Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting

by JC Shurburtt.

Dale TrimbleThree-star cornerback Dale Trimble (Gadsden, Ala./Gadsden) is getting interest from Tennessee, Ole Miss, Clemson, Mississippi State and Kentucky, among others. He said that he knows he is going to make a visit to Knoxville to check out the Vols this season.

His recruiter is former Alabama assistant Lance Thompson, known as one of the top recruiters in the SEC.

“Coach Thompson keeps it real with me,” he said. “I like that about him.”

The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder is the nation’s No. 20 prospect at cornerback.

Evaluation: Trimble may have been overshadowed a bit at corner last year by teammate Dre Kirkpatrick, but he is a fine prospect in his own right and really stepped up to the challenge on film as teams threw away from the nation’s No. 1 corner. While he may lack Kirkpatrick’s coveted size and speed, Trimble is just as savvy and instinctive. Lacks great height and bulk but is wiry and rangy which allows him to make up a lot of ground in coverage. Best asset may be his ability to read the quarterback and see the play develop quickly. Does a great job anticipating the pass and jumping routes. Covers a lot of ground quickly and is very active around the football. Shows good underneath breaking quicks. Equally impressive defending the deep throw. Flashes good recovery burstand body control when the ball is in the air and really times his jump well separating the ball from the receiver. Like to see him polish his hands a bit more but he is comfortable around the football and plays the ball not the man in coverage. Shows he is feisty coming up to press and fighting off the stalk-block when trying to set the edge versus the run. Strong tackler who can play physical and get over the trash. Safety is not out of the question if he can continue to physically develop. The range, breaking skills off the hash and overall instincts are there to mold as a high-point player. His speed may be better suited at safety as well; we did not see lockdown man-to-man speed and the transitional quicks that project high as a true cover corner, he is better reading the quarterback in zone schemes and making plays on the ball in front of him than flipping his hips. Overall, Trimble brings a lot of physical talent to the table and some intangibles you can’t coach. Look for his recruiting stock to take off this spring.
