It has been a relatively quiet recruiting front this fall. While there has been the occasional big splash, many of the nation’s top programs are waiting for answers as 10 of the top 20 players in the ESPNU 150 are still undecided.
In this edition of the rankings, which expands to 20, there are a few surprise teams making strides, most notably the Auburn Tigers, who jump from No. 12 to No. 8. Gene Chizik has been able to earn commits from many early targets dating back to the spring recruiting period, including RB Michael Dyer, WR Trovon Reed, DE LaDarius Owens and ATH Antonio Goodwin (Atlanta, Ga./Booker T. Washington). Now the key is to be able to close the deal on some much-needed offensive lineman.
Penn State, which jumps two spots to No. 5, has been quietly been putting together a terrific class, especially on defense. Seven of Penn State’s 20 verbal commitments are in the front seven and the defensive line is stout. QB Robert Bolden is a huge get as quarterback depth is a big concern in State College.
Miami debuts in the top 15, and despite coaching changes both FSU and Notre Dame enter the top 20. The big question is can the Seminoles and Irish stay there?
