Oakland Park, FL.- Wayne Lyons is not a new name on any recruiting radar. His much publicized 50 question questionnaire has been a big topic all over the internet. Wayne is a stellar student in the classroom, boasting a near 5.0 GPA. On the football field however he’s a tough hard nosed safety. He has offers from all across the nation, but is making a southeast swing at this point in time.
“I’m at Ole Miss right now and it’s going good. I was at LSU yesterday and I was at FSU the day before. I have been to FSU before but it was nice to be there again. Tomorrow I’m headed to Tennessee. They are recruiting me hard, I haven’t talked to the new staff a lot yet, but I’m looking to hear more from them. They are recruiting me pretty hard though. I’ll be finishing my trip by visiting Alabama on Saturday and Florida on Sunday. I’ll be back home on Monday.”
Right now Wayne has no public list and is not ready to make one yet. He is still in the process but claims one could be coming soon.
“I’m going to try and start putting together a top list. Right now everybody is even. But I would say that Stanford, UCLA, and Florida are recruiting me the hardest. I’m still going over some of the questionnaires, but I got a lot of good feedback.”
Lyons is the 69th ranked player on the ESPNU 150, and 7th rated safety.
He holds over 40 offers including Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, and others.
ESPNU Scouts Inc Evaluation:
Lyons is hard-hitting, physical defensive back with all the tools needed to develop into a great strong safety at major college level. Lacks a few inches of ideal height but is well-built, strong with coveted toughness. Most productive positioned down in the box as a run supporter. Flashes great underneath range and can make plays sideline-to-sideline. Drives hard on the football with good plant and drive burst. Takes direct angles with little wasted motion and runs through ball carriers on contact. A collision type of tackler who limits second efforts, sets the tone of the defense with his big hits and creates turnovers. We would like to see him break down and wrap up more securely as he can overrun the ball at times. Explosive and stout at the point of attack and can get over blocks with strong hand technique. Does a great job retaining proper leverage and keeping the ball inside to his help as a force player; very difficult to seal for smaller slots. Versatile as he can play down in the box as a productive run supporter and line up as a high point defender and effectively support his deep zone as a half field defender. Shows good burst and range breaking off the hash over routes and is an intimidating presence over the middle driving on intermediate routes. Has a tight pedal and transitions smoothly out showing good burst playing the ball in front of him. Our main concern when projecting for the next level is his ability to line up over quicker slots and mirror tightly in man and off-man coverages. Lacks great speed and desired length as well. Shows some lateral hip stiffness changing direction and is a bit straight-lined. Physical upside is limited. That said, Lyons is one of the better ball-hawks and true strong safeties in this class; should be very productive if he lands in the right scheme that employs a lot 4-4.
