Venice, FL.- The addition of top offers is something most recruits dream about. For many in the country now is the time for that to happen with spring evaluations almost done. For Clay Burton the last two weeks have been very good to him. He’s added about 8 offers over the last two weeks and looks only to be getting warmed up. The 6’3″ 225 defensive end prospect has a lot of tools that make him a coveted prospect. Here’s the latest regarding his offers and recruitment.

“Well I think I’m up to around 20 offers now. Pitt, Duke, Tennessee, LSU, Cincinnati, and Boston College are a few of the recent ones. I actually just hung up with Florida State and they offered me. I already have been offered by Clemson, Notre Dame, Stanford, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Rutgers, FIU, West Virginia, Purdue, and USF. I’m getting lots of mail, North Carolina, Nebraska, and Michigan to name a few who have not offered yet. There is really only one school I can think of I’d like to hear more from and that is So Cal (USC), I liked them a lot growing up.”

With all of these schools showing early involvement, Clay spoke about what he is looking for in a college.

“I’m looking for coaching stability, will I leave there for a better job meaning education is first. Are they a contender for their conference? Are they national champion contenders or not? I like to win so I will look at that. Schools are recruiting me at defensive end, but a few are looking at outside linebacker like Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. I’m looking to commit sooner rather than later, I will be graduating early so I will enroll early. I’m going to take some visits this summer and get it narrowed down. I’ve been to Georgia Tech, Clemson, and USF for junior days. I will definitely take a trip to Notre Dame, that’s a big visit.”

With Florida State jumping in the mix, where does that put the Noles?

“The offer caught my eye. They just offered like twenty minutes ago, I got a text to call coach Dawsey and he gave me the news. I assume they want me to play with my hand down at defensive end. They are a good school and I’m looking forward to learning more about them. I have an early top 6, but I’m still open. Clemson, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Ole Miss, an South Florida. Right now I would say that Notre Dame, Clemson, and Georgia Tech are recruiting me the hardest. But that is not a final list or anything.”

His brother Trey Burton is a quarterback at Florida. Clay has called upon him to guide him through the process so far.

“He told me some great lessons, be humble, give thanks to god. He’s been real supportive of me through the process.”

Last year Venice had a great season that ended on a sour note, they will look to capitalize on that season to make some improvements moving forward.

“Last year we went 11-2 overall. We lost on national tv, but we won our district. We were eliminated in the first round of playoffs at home, we should have won. We have a strong group of seniors coming back with one common goal. I have been working on my technique and my leadership this spring.”

At the end of the conversation Clay recalled upon another school that he’d like to hear more from.

“Oregon. I got a letter from them after sophomore year. I’m definitely interested. It’s an attractive school and I would give them a shot if they recruited me.”

College coaches have told Clay they like his motor, power, and leadership among other qualities.
