Did anybody hear what Barkley said last night?

Basketball has not gotten better. I don’t know if it’s the speed or what, but officials are having trouble seeing body contact versus ball contact and consistently calling the game. A meaningless rip through foul versus blatant contact at the rim not being called. We have gotten away from fundamental violations as well.
Fundamental violations are a thing of the past, unfortunately. The speed of the game has increased, but watch just about any game these days and you’ll be baffled with the lack of fundamental calls for things like traveling, walks, etc. That’s not even to mention 5 second calls and the amount of stuff players can get away with these days on the court. Blows my mind. I’m approaching my mid-40’s and can remember a time when you had to be sound in fundamentals to play the game at a basic level and that translated to the higher levels up to the pros.

The last 3-4 years, I do think the officiating in basketball has gotten significantly better. Officials used to really favor UNC, Duke, UK, Kansas, etc. I don't see that anymore.

Football, on the other hand, is a disaster right now and needs to be addressed. I also think we need to take a deep dive in the football rule book and make changes in general.
I beg to differ. The only thing worse than sec football refs are sec basketball refs. I’ve said multiple times on this board that a conference with the money the sec has can afford to hire, train and hold accountable full time officials. It’s a travesty watching some of the calls or no calls in some of these games.

Yep. I am roughly the same age.

I do think though if they called games strict on fundamental violations that the average fan would hate it, just like if they did that in football. They do need to update the rules or something if they aren't going to call it though.

I'm more upset that they aren't consistent. You can't let players camp out in the lane all game then randomly call a 3 seconds later. Don't call a touch foul then ignore a clothesline. Don't let the offensive player push his way to the basket but call the defender when they brace themselves and looks like they push back. I'm more of a guy that wants them to let them play and call obvious things.

Absolutely. Your entire second paragraph sums it up perfectly with good examples we all see game in, game out. There is no explanation for any of it and zero accountability for the crews and/or leagues that are party to it. Even the media has a tough time following the logic or lack thereof, which says a lot in itself.

Perfectly officiated games aren’t achievable. But fair and consistent absolutely is and we are far from that these days.

It really is as simple as a ref having his buddy place bets and they share the winnings. Don’t know if that’s actually happened yet, but how could the NCAA ever discover that?
The only way I can think of is an audit by the IRS to see if their spending is more than their income. This is assuming they do not report gambling winnings on their taxes. If they do declare gambling winnings then maybe the audit is not necessary.

I don't think the outcome of the game is where you are most likely to see some shenanigans. The Jontay Porter prop betting scandal is probably not an isolated incident though. That sort of thing will be less likely to detect or raise a red flag.
that's why I excluded the outcome of the game, and referred to the betting outcome

I believe sometimes Barkley just talks to hear his voice. Why would refs bet on games when caught they would go to prison. Betting on games they don’t officiate may be different, but that’s kinda hard to believe. Then again, greed is a powerful thing.
People do a lot of stuff that would send them to prison if they get caught

I truly believe Igor must have pissed off some of the officials we have had this year. I have never seen one player get taken out at the rim so many times and barely ever get a call.

Chuck keeps it real whether people agree with them or not is always open to debate. However, he drops some real gems from time to time if you pay attention!! he knows all the codes and if he’s outspoken about something specific to the games and systems, he’s probably got a strong reason for it!

My favorite quote of his live on set years ago was talking about paying players and he said “why do you think I went to Auburn? They paid more! if you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying” 😂😂😂

The entire set was shocked he said it…..they quickly went to break!!!!
