NCAA Game Thread: (1) Texas vs (5) Lady Vols

Tennessee first game this season against Texas came down to the final seconds.
Two evenly matched team.
Coach Caldwell has all the talent that she needs to win this game and advance to the Elite 8. The LVs are playing outstanding.
If CKC feels that she needs to play more size together then Hollingshead and Spearman on the court together can match up with the front court of Texas.
Both can run and step out to shoot the 3. Both can drive and attack the rim.
Both can rebound and play defense on the perimeter and in the paint.
This is a wrinkle that hasn’t been used much this season and with both players looking as strong as they have all season it could be a dangerous 6’4 & 6’5 combo.
GBO ‘solid’!

I think people under value Moore from texas who killed us on the boards as well she is not playing which now its really a even playing field because they start 4 perimeter players and Jones so we should be fine hopefully lol

Just reviewed the box score. Ruby had a lights out game and Coop had one of her worst outings. TX dominated on the glass by 15 but the LVs shot 50% from the field to stay close (if they had only a better FT shooting game!)

Texas's Moore only had 4 rebounds so yeah she wasn't the one who killed us. The killer was Taylor Jones who had 14 rebounds (and 9 ORs). I imagine that boxing her out will be a point of emphasis.

Jones is the problem she's tall and broad. You don't block her out very efficiently and she can reach over you for rebounds. As she did that whole game. Hope they call some fouls on that but she wasn't really going over there back. Just so big she would reach above and take the ball.

Kim has placed signs all around the arena this week saying " REBOUND REBOUND REBOUND ELEVATE TO THE ELITE 8" so i think she is really hounding on this and she means business.

I know Moore only had 4 boards, but it felt like she had at least 2 huge offensive rebounds for And 1s in the 2nd half ( I could be mistaken ) which clearly made a difference in the game. Besides Jones, her rebounding stood out to me.

That’s where our players need to actually jump and force the ref to make those calls.

I remember the same. Moore had multiple put backs that resulted in and-one’s. We lost by four.

Reviewing the boxscore, the number that really sticks out like a sore thumb is the number of personal fouls called against the Lady Vols: 22 vs 10 against uT.

Should get at least a slightly better whistle on a neutral court, with much better crowd representation.

Another number that shouts attention is the distribution of minutes for Texas. Reducing the stoppages of play via fouls will be huge. Go get ‘em Ladies!

Their plus ten shots is a thing we have to change. That came with their rebounding plus 15. Free throws plus two. We got beat by second chance points as they rebounded their first miss we have to prevent that and we will win,.

Oh great, another thing to worry about! In general, TX draws a lot of fouls and, in the first meeting, their bigs seem to get the calls by virtue of "being aggressive"-- i.e., our bigs were called for fouls where they had their arms up and were in vertical positions when the TX player slammed into them. [Conversely, TX players could climb over the back of a LV and bear wrestle LV players to the ground and get "no calls" for "good physical play" or that is how it seemed anyway]

But, early foul trouble on Spearman or Hollingshead would be a blow to the LVs chances. I would like to see our guards attacking the paint to change the foul equation.

Jump and go down when she's behind them for the rebound. We can't out jump Jones. The way she played against our Lady's was unstoppable. That's why I blame there coach for losing any games. We have to deny her the ball. Too big and strong, she can get us in foul trouble very easily if they do it right. I banking on our press to make the difference this time.

Texas is a good team. Texas nor any of their players are unstoppable at any part of the game. There is a 6 foot post at LSU doing everything these posts at Texas are doing and more.
Tennessee posts are playing more like posts in March Madness following the break.
A lot of the deficits were due to the style of play. If we want better rebounding and defense then play Hollingshead and Spearman or Latham more together on the court. If you go with four guards that’s an automatic disadvantage against any team that is built on post play. These last two games the more Latham is on the court the better. And the truth is, it was just a four point game.

I rewatched the game from earlier in the season and when Latham was guarding Booker, let’s just say she wasn’t scoring at all.

Jones played 29 min. 23 points 15 rebounds . 9-12 shooting if she misses she got the rebound. I said IF the coach used her right she's unstoppable. She can get us in foul trouble quickly if we're not careful our rotation helps some but we don't want them at the free throw line getting rest. I think our defense surge will make a difference this time.

Exactly. Tennessee players and coaches are doing something in the 1st year that hasn’t been seen at this level of collegiate sports.
I don’t care what the team or players stats were for Texas post players, Tennessee could’ve easily won that game. The athleticism of the LVs is elite, yet as Coach Caldwell continues to solidify her system you see these athletes becoming incredible basketball players!
To win in the Sweet 16, we will need to play even better due to the stakes being higher!
One of the most ridiculous stat lines I’ve seen is Talaysia Cooper numbers against Ohio State.
Although Cooper stat line stood out, the stellar play of the ENTIRE team was phenomenal.
GBO ‘solid’!

This is such a good press conference! Better questions than usual, which led to interesting answers. Her honesty is always a high point for me, including here admitting that she is not sure we have the capability to outrebound Texas though we need to be as focused on rebounded as possibly. Coaches usually don't say this unless it is used as a motivation tool, but I think here it was just an honest assessment. Another of several interesting comments was that she didn't think that OSU's comeback in the 3rd quarter was not due to us resting on our lead like earlier in the year but more a tribute to OSU being a great press team that will always go on runs against anyone they play. She is also extremely pleased (for her) about how the team has been playing and practicing.
