NCAA Game Thread: (1) Texas vs (5) Lady Vols

How many fair tosses do you get ? One gets the ball on the way up ? Reviews Reviews. Don't think they will ever go back to jump balls , they do it to start the game because it doesn't matter when they rotate. The fair way would be just give it to the defense for getting the tie up.
I agree with everything you said if it was like 20 years ago. Now in todays game and I'm not sure when it changed but if you say slip on the floor and a D player jumps on top of you and gets her hands on the ball its almost always a called jump. Its almost like the refs saying OK anytime this happens I'm deferring to a jump ball as a bail out, mostly for the ref, its lazy refs IMO.

Still more hard, factual opinionated proof, I tell yuh, that ESPN hates us.

Why Texas will win: Few teams, if any, can match the Longhorns' defensive toughness. The schemes and personnel are a superior combination. Rori Harmon as the harassing on-ball defender on the perimeter makes Vic Schaefer's strategies work, while the wall of size inside of Taylor Jones, Kyla Oldacre and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda can squeeze the life out of opposing offenses attempting to score in the lane. Throw in that on most nights Texas has the best player on the court in Madison Booker and it's advantage, Longhorns.

Why Tennessee will win: The Lady Vols can simply outshoot the Longhorns -- not necessarily more accurately but in sheer volume. Tennessee makes only 32.9% of its 3-pointers but shoots more than all but two teams in the country and makes the second-most of those shots. Texas does not have the willingness, or the firepower, to compete in that area. If the Lady Vols can cash in from deep enough times, the Longhorns might not be able to make enough 2-pointers to compensate.

X factor: These are two of the best rebounding teams in the country, but when they met in Austin in late January (a four-point Longhorns win), Texas was plus-15 on the boards -- and that was with Oldacre as a nonfactor. The Lady Vols' best chance is to tighten that difference up, especially if it comes in the form of second-chance points. So keep an eye on those offensive rebounding numbers. If the advantage goes to Oldacre and Jones, the Longhorns will prevail. -- Creme

Creme: Texas 75, Tennessee 70
Pelton: Texas 81, Tennessee 69

Voepel: Texas 66, Tennessee 62

I agree with this with one qualification. I think too often they allow the defense to maul the person with the ball to get the tie without calling a foul, whereas anything similar without the tie would almost always be called a foul. So, if the defense is going to get the possession for every tie, they need to do the tie without fouling.

I imagine this game will be quite different than the last one though perhaps just as close. It is unlikely that we will repeat our 50% FG percent and almost 50% for three pointers against a great defensive team like Texas. Conversely, I highly doubt that we will be killed by about a 2:1 margin on offensive boards and hopefully will create a bit more than the 12 turnovers we did in the first game. Texas now mostly utilizes just 7 players due to injury whereas they had 8 main players last game. This may help us wear them out more than before.

Agreed. I believe the LVs will handle the boards--both defensive and offensive--this time. I see the Elite 8 coming around the bend for the LVs. GBO.
I like your thinking. If we play our game up and down the court wide open we win, think it will wear them down. Need to give them four quarters of he//

I didn't realize they were down to a core 7. Yep, that could help us, I believe.

As for FG%s, if we can't reach last game's numbers, I'd take two low 40s as long as we're getting a little above average steals on them. Seems to me when opponents are getting picked a lot, they panic, and we play better on both ends,

In other words, Cooper needs to Cooper the crap outta Tejas!

Something else going in the LVs favor is that Spearman, Latham, and Hollingshead have all upped their games since the first meeting. Texas really dominated in the interior and it is not likely to be so lopsided this time around.

I think the LVs win if they have unicorn game where Coop, Spear, and Whitehorn are all locked in offensively. They were trending in that direction against OSU but Jewel was only 2-9 though she hit a very timely 3.

Yes and if we run the floor like SC did against them in SEC tourney, Texas doesn’t stand a chance. They can’t match TN speed or athleticism. Pack the paint and make TX have to rely on their 3 pt shooting.

Which I don’t understand why we didn’t do the first game. I think that’s the game where I wanted to see Kim make adjustments badly. I hope we can beat them when it counts. We didn’t do particularly well with our “rematches” this year.

That’s the game Kim missed, Jenna was coaching. We did pretty well we just let them win the rebounding margin.

We didn’t box out on their bigs at all. We will need Jill, Latham and Zee to rebound and box out. They should also have the advantage of taking TXs bigs off the dribble.

Bigs are going to have to bring it..remember watching this game and screaming at the tv JONES AND MOORE whipped up on the boards if we had kept the margin respectable that wouldve been a double digit win easily...Oldacre only played 11 mins in that game and i expect the same this time as this is a bad matchup for her athletically....i can see Mwenentanda playing alot in this game

IMO, it was more their size than anything else they did, or that we didn't do, that cost us the game. They can get rebounds and points over the top of us, and that's gotta be Kim's biggest concern about them.

Going to be a big task, but we did play them tough at their home court already, but I also know those games don’t matter this time of year. I’m sticking with our current efforts and the LV winning. I think we need at least to score 80 to win.

LVs: 80
TX: 72

My take is that the LV's have already exceeded their expectations and I am excited for their future.
Win or lose I am satisfied with how the season has gone (a few disappointing games of course).

With that being said, only one team can win it all, and I really think that will be this Texas team. I wish
the LV were playing any other team. I hope they prove me wrong (play with "house money" and win this one!)

Only 3 shots away from having a unbelievable season. Very easily could have been 3 more wins. It's almost hard to believe how much better each player has progressed. If everyone comes back that the coaches want plus a couple of bigs from the portal then sky is the limit. GLV 💥

Okay, so who's going to be able to make the trip to Birmingham to watch our Lady Vols win their Sweet 16 game? If you can, try to go!

There are many unbelievably cheap tickets available at stubhub.com
I'm going! I lived there for ten years, so I have been drooling over the opportunity to eat at all my fav places, run the Civil Rights route, and see some old friends. If we can beat Texas, that is the cherry on a very sweet sundae.

I hope we have a nice turnout!
