Thinking about Dooley compared to Fulmer

Will you be at the Kentucky game?

Phil's success as an interim coach hastened his demise. Backstabbing makes it sound like some dishonest backroom low life move CPF made. The only thing CPF did was win. There is a BIG difference Jackson.

No, I won't be at Kentucky game.

You do make a point. But Phil did more than just win. When they asked him if he would be the new coach, he could have said no. Then they would have stuck with johnnie a couple of more years and it all would have worked itself out.

Twenty years later, johnnie still mad. That is a shame.

1 year removed from the SECG championship? Borrowed time?

Are you serious? We feel backward into the Championship that year. All was not well with UT football at the end of Fulmer's tenure and a change was long overdue. We were a 2nd tier power behind UF and that was not going to change while Meyer was there and the addition of Saban didn't bode well either.

Yes I am serious. You can spin it anyway you want it, but you are what your record says you are.

I love Phillip Fulmer for being a true Volunteer. He did so much for our university. He brought a championship to Knoxville. He is more of a Vol than most of those who prowl this message board. However, comparing him to Coach Dooley is pointless.

Coach Fulmer bears much of the blame for where we are now. He had become complacent ... recruiting was going downhill, he was regularly getting out-coached by our rivals, he couldn't win a bowl game to save his life ( remember the back-to-back humiliations against Maryland and Clemson in ATL?), and then finally hiring Dave Clawson. Coach Fulmer should have probably been let go 2 or 3 years before he was. We were clearly having some issues ... BIG issues ... ones that , I think, started showing up with our complete flop in the 2001 SEC Championship game. Dear goodness, I still remember watching us completely choke away that opportunity.

But here we are today with Coach Dooley. His issues are just that ... HIS issues. Regardless of where one stands on Derek Dooley, Coach Fulmer was not (and is still not) the answer. Like I said, I love Coach Fulmer but his destiny and that of our football program diverged a long time ago.

Let's not trash Phillip Fulmer ... AND let's not pretend that he's the logical choice to fix the situation now. Coach Dooley will either stay or go. I got no idea which. But he and Fulmer are connected in no way other than they were both men who were lucky enough to lead the Volunteers.

Sorry about the rant. Must be all the emotion of this (and previous) seasons boiling through ... plus, it might be the alcohol ... HA!

Majors is bitter..I get that. If you were offered your dream job, what would you have said? If you were given an extension, would you take it? I was hoping you would be at the game...we could debate it, which might be more interesting than Dooley's product on the field. lol

Didn't two SEC teams provide about 1/4 of his wins - Vandy and Ky.

tennessee has had 321 conference wins since the sec formed in 1933

129 wins have come against vandy and kentucky.

this is nothing new. 40.1% of all of tennessee's sec wins have been against vandy and kentucky

Make no mistake about it. I have been a Vol fan for over 40 years and finally Vanderbilt has a better program than UT. Never thought I would see the day where a team that has roughly half the fans in the stadium that we do and are able to play a lot better than we do. The people in charge just continue to let the program dwindle down to nothing. If we lose to Vandy, everyone needs to go, Hart included. He should have already addressed the problem.

You make good points, but my point is if we did not put up with this with Fulmer 2 bad seasons out of the last 4 and out of the last 17 total, why on earth would we put up with it, with Dooley? I am not suggesting to hire Fulmer, although it would be an upgrade or maybe have Fulmer finish the year as a respect thing, that he never got. But yes we do not need Fulmer as the coach now, but that is not the point of this thread.

They got huff and puff going for them. Hotsauce and chest bumping and their coach is hella smart but this is UT we might be down but we do not and will not stay down.

I got the impression from some of the respondents, that there are many who want to bring him back. Didn't think you were suggesting that we should.

Hell, I just want to win again. This sick feeling every Saturday is killing me.

The thing that drove me nuts about Fulmer, was how predictable our offense became and how reluctant he was to change/make adjustments.

The game started passing him by and he became a dinosaur very quickly. The change needed to be made, but the choices after have been disasters.

Exactly.

I looked up the 2007 team's record. We lost to Florida 59-20, Alabama 41-17.

We beat South Carolina in overtime. We beat Vandy 25-24, Kentucky in 4 overtimes, just to slide into the SEC Championship game - where we lost to LSU.

Not a "bad" year by some standards, I suppose, but really!?! Our w/l record was not that bad, but our record could just as easily have been 7-7. Kind of like yesterday's game. We won, but was it really something that we could walk away from feeling all happy inside?

It was obvious that the Fulmer regime had seen it's much better days. I enjoyed it, but it was time for a change. Once again, it is time to move on - forward, not back.

I am neither for nor against Fulmer or Dooley. They are both good men. I just know when it is time to go forward. No reason to feel sorry for either of these men. They know its just business. So do I.

With an ass whooping of Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana Lafayette (comparing to Troy, not conference, obviously), etc. I'd take OT vs. USC and UK and a win compared to losing to them.

tennessee's conference record since 1933 (when the sec formed) is 321-178-20 (not counting 2012)

Conference Record 1933-2011

since 1933, tennessee is 67-9-1 against vandy and 62-14-3 against kentucky

Tennessee all-opponent record 1933-2011

62+67=129.

129/321= 40.18%

so, actually if you round up, 40.2% of tennessee's sec wins are against vandy and kentucky

you missed my point, I know your obsession of everything Vol runs deep. its just good to know, you don't do your own research.

Look at that Fulmer's worst two seasons in the SEC is equal to Dooley's best...it is such a joke.

Sanctified winner vs sanctified loser

That said time for Fulmer to go and DD came in when no one else would. Blame Kiffen furthermore blame Hamilton.

can you break down the numbers for every coach in Vol history? I would like to have those number too please.

Let me help. Legendary, HOF coach. 152-52 in the SEC. National Championship. 1 year removed from the SECG championship vs. ?????????????

1 more point that I have raised with no answer. If I presented those statistice without the name, VN would gladly want this coach. Tennessee FIRED this coach.

Look at fulmers record the last 5 years of his tenure and look at his record without david cutcliffe...

I love fulmer and appreciate everything he done for tennessee

But most people wanted fulmr gone at the time rather they admit it or not

We haven't been in the big picture since probably 2002 so this is nothing new
