‘20 NC SG Jaden Springer (UT commit 10/23/19)

James and Springer are more similar than Johnson. Johnson is as close to a Josh Richardson clone as we've had. JRich played PG as a SR out of desperation, but it took quite a bit of development over 3 years. Johnson could develop at a similar pace and perhaps work his way into that ability, though we hope it never comes to that, and I doubt Johnson is around for 4 years.

Both Springer and James are good at getting to the basket. Both are capable shooters, though Springer is probably the better of the two. Both can and will play PG at times and not look out of position. James can probably play 1-3. Springer, more of a 1-2 guy.

With the possible exception of Springer as a PG, it is amazing that we could follow up the addition of JJ James with possibly the best signing class EVER (Johnson. Walker, Springer), all 4 of them non-post players, and NOT have a single TRUE point guard or a TRUE shooting guard. It would be so ironic if Barnes broke through with TN's first ever FF... minus a traditional PG which is widely considered a necessity to advance deep into the NCAAT.

So in addition to a much needed post player, we appear to also be missing a zone busting shooter. But at least none of those 4 look to be putting up bricks. It sounds like every one is a capable shooting threat from long range, just that shooting isn't any's greatest skill.

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the 3-PL is going to be pushed back. Good thing that one of CRB's noted attributes is making players better shooters.

This is where a guy like Cam Hayes would go a long way. Being way optimistic here, but I think if we ended up with Hayes, Springer, Johnson, and Walker, and you add them to JJJ, Plavsic, Bailey, ORN, and Fulk, then whatever you get from Pember, Gaines, Pons, Johnson, or Kent is a bonus.

I do think that a team with 2 pretty good outside shooters is a bigger threat than a team with one great shooter and one bad shooter. Two good shooters would spread out a defense. Springer, James, Johnson, and Walker would have defenses flustered.

I hope James stays more than one year. He can use this year to learn PG behind Turner (obviously still starting next to him). That would alleviate those concerns next year. Walker seems to have enough size to play the 4.

I think we do, but do we have enough room for a 4th player this year?

Also, if James stays and we add another player, we have to bring one of Plavsic, Olivier, or insert 4th commit that's a post player off the bench. That's a good problem to have.

People keep forgetting about Victor the transfer PG from Oregon. I think that’s his name right? Him, Springer, Keon Johnson, Walker, and Plavsic. Now that is a very solid starting 5. James plays a second season I think he ends up being the PG. James, Springer, Johnson, Walker, and Plavsic... Wow that’s a great starting 5. With a deep bench as well.

Yup, Victor Bailey...I think given the guys we’ve landed/have on roster/pursuing that it seems apparent the staff plans on turning Bailey into a full on PG.

Something tells me ORN just might crack that lineup. My gosh, what an embarrassment of riches if it works out that way!

I don’t see that starting 5 happening for a few reasons. James May be gone... and if he is that’s good cuz he had a monster season for us... and it would be nice to be bigger than 6’6 at the 4. Take James out and move everyone down or have one of them come off the bench if James is there but either way find someone else for the 4

A stacked Memphis team full of piss and vinegar against a rebuilding Tennessee team.

Im certain that Barnes can coach circles around Penny but talent will overcome X's and O's most of the time.

What was it Phil Fulmer said?

"Its not about the X's and O's its about the Jimmy's and Joe's."

I dont want to be negative about this team. I just think sometimes we let our hopes and wishes overcome logic and logic says this will be a rebuilding year.
I agree with that. On paper, a little scary. But, games are actually played for a reason. We will see, but valid points you make.

Rob Lewis when asked UNC was making Bryce Thompson more of a priority than Springer right now. Do you think TN might be the slight leader for Springer right now out of his top 5 based off this? fwiw
I've thought for a long time that Tennessee was the slight leader for Springer. UNC has never prioritized him and never had a conversation with his parents until a couple of weeks ago. Will Tennessee get him? I don't know, crazy things can happen with a talent like that in the homestretch so I'm not assuming anything right now. I like their chances, but I'm doubtful that UNC is even their main competition.
