The vast majority of NIL deals nationwide aren’t going to be worth more than a few thousand dollars. There aren’t many businesses that can afford to sign dozens of football and basketball players to million dollar deals.
There's a lot of room between a few thousand dollars and a million dollars. The people paying this kind of money were likely funneling it to players through the program, anyway, prior to NIL, and now it is at least legal, and a tax write-off as a legitimate business advertising expense.

Pilot isn't batting an eyelash at a couple million dollars in advertising, public appearances, and photo ops. That is the kind of stuff they were already paying for. Now they can give it to players, legally, and use them in their ads. Same with Dish Network. Local car dealerships and restaurants. Each business has a level of compensation they are comfortable with, but in totality, there is plenty of money to go around, and again, this isn't an additional expense for these companies, in many cases. And not everyone is getting paid. Only the highest profile players.

or maybe kids see how underutilized five stars Keon and Jaden were on the offensive end and how absolutely mundane and out of date our offensive system is and think “yeah no thanks I’m gonna pass.”

I know you guys just want to assume it’s NIL but these kids factor a lot of things in their decisions.

Ahhh, yes.

Blame Barnes. 🙄

I’ll say it again though: it’s not that big of a deal. I’d like an actual big to pair with Edwards but this is the risk you run. We have a ton of guys who can theoretically come back next year. And things can definitely change between now and the Spring with coaching changes and things like that.

If this happens next fall then I’ll get officially concerned

I'm taking the same approach. Although, a good bit of top tier 2023 guys recently cut Tennessee or committed elsewhere already.

I’d say we will wait till spring to look for a big…or seriously recruit one. Only reason I say this is because most of the time our guards are the ones being drafted, not our post players. This is why you see us recruiting guards in the fall and most of the time we recruit the bigger dudes in the spring.

For example, we have BHH, Aidoo, Nkam, Tamba, and whoever else I’m forgetting all potentially coming back next year. Really no immediate need right now. That could deff change like you said in the spring. If BHH goes pro or we have a transfer, you’ll see us kick it up a notch.

Is someone stopping local car dealerships/dish network/Pilot from reaching out to UT athletes, or vice versa?

Did we land Aidoo and BHH after seeing how Keon and Jaden were used?

Dillon Mitchell is going to play for Chris Beard

The other thing: We get immediate transfers. Even if you miss in recruiting we could still get a stud big or guard in 2022 like how we got an elite shooter in Powell.
Absolutely, which is why no one should be freaking out. You lose Fulk, Chandler and let’s say Uros…you bring in Jackson and Edwards and you’re full at 13.

Nope. Just like no one is stopping Tennessee from networking with these businesses and alumni to encourage their patronage and participation with their student athletes, either, in an effort to endorse and market their products and services.

In fact, for an athletic department that has had an Associate AD title for every position imaginable, I'd probably have created a position for an Associate AD of NIL whose sole job was to network with businesses and alumni to generate and foster relationships and deals with student athletes. Maybe they've done that and it's all been kept quiet. Not sure how that sells your program to future recruits if that's the case, though.

If Tennessee businesses aren’t keen to offering NIL deals compared to other places then I guess NIL is going to hurt us. But again I’d like to actually know what is happening across our peers that has us at such a disadvantage. A future lottery pick from UK driving a Porsche doesn’t threaten me much

Would it threaten you if his name was Cason Wallace?

If you're fine fishing in the #75 to #125 range (recruiting rankings), then maybe not. But if you want to fish in the top-50 waters, then it should.

No, knowing that UK was always his dream school. Losing in recruiting to UK doesnt portend anything bad for the program. We could finish in the top 5 every year and still lose in the recruiting rankings to Kentucky
