Yeah we have just one commitment, but as of right now we don’t even have one spot for next year. It was always gonna be a small class, so I don’t think one commitment is all that odd at this point when we brought in six kids last year. We’ve had at least one class under Barnes with just one kid signed that I can think ofWe have one commitment and signing day is less than a month away. That doesn't strike you as odd? Especially with the timing of NIL becoming a reality and several of those targeted players suddenly taking a step back to reevaluate their recruitment? Guys we seemingly led for and had just finished up official visits to Knoxville. We haven't just missed on a few guys. We've missed on, literally, every one of our longtime targets, save for BJE, who was always coming here.
Maybe it's just an absolute coincidence that we lost traction with these kids immediately after NIL came into affect. I just don't think Basilio is making up the idea of us being ill-prepared with regards to NIL based solely on the idea that, "Well it's Basilio...what does he possibly know?".
And again, I'm not in panic mode, especially with the portal being a better than adequate fallback option to filling roster holes. Chandler Jackson also seems like a fine addition, if we land him, as an additional option at guard.
I’ve agreed with you lots of times the offense is antiquated, but if kids aren’t coming here I doubt it’s because of Keon and Jaden’s experience considering they both just became first round NBA draft picksor maybe kids see how underutilized five stars Keon and Jaden were on the offensive end and how absolutely mundane and out of date our offensive system is and think “yeah no thanks I’m gonna pass.”
I know you guys just want to assume it’s NIL but these kids factor a lot of things in their decisions.
I'm not wanting to be contentious because you and I have always had a healthy respect for each other, even if we disagreed.Yeah we have just one commitment, but as of right now we don’t even have one spot for next year. BTO listed above intervening circumstances that are already out in the open as to why we didn’t land some of the kids we were after, and they’re reasonable, so I don’t see much of a need to give the NIL narrative any credence considering we’ve got one guy saying it who often speaks out of his ___ and other, more reliable (relatively) sources saying it’s not true
No contentiousness on my end, if it came off that way that's my bad. I agree with you that having one guy committed was not the plan, but it does seem like we have a narrower focus than we have had in years past. It seems to me we've really zeroed in at 2 or 3 guys at a time and moved to other plans when they went elsewhere, as opposed to recruiting a half dozen or so kids intensely. Granted I have no connections and get my recruiting info pretty much solely from this board, so this may be inaccurateI'm not wanting to be contentious because you and I have always had a healthy respect for each other, even if we disagreed.
But, if we don't have open spots, why are we recruiting so many guys so heavily? You and I both know we aren't turning away the kids we've been recruiting, and the numbers will "work out". So, I don't buy the idea that only having one commitment on October 26th is by design. Not that you're explicitly saying that, but it feels like you're perhaps implicitly excusing/reasoning our recruiting misses in lieu of it.
And, yeah, BTO has reasoning behind every miss, but he's always going to paint Barnes in the most positive light just as ZJC is going to glean the other end of that spectrum.
Barnes has improved recruiting every year for the last 3 years. Now, all of a sudden, he's striking out at every turn. Maybe it's NIL, and maybe not. Maybe he hired two assistants that aren't carrying their weight. I don't know what it is, to be honest, and I'm open to suggestions/ideas if you have any. I just don't believe it's because we don't have room.
Never got a moment of contention from you, either. I just wanted to absolve myself of any hint of it, as well, as it became clear that we probably will have to agree to disagree on this particular issue. No contentiousness on my end, if it came off that way that's my bad. I think the coaches being a down grade in recruiting is more plausible to me than the NIL, but my main point over anything above is that I still am not sure I would say there even needs to be some "reason" Tennessee basketball is not landing 5 stars any particular cycle unless one obviously presents itself. It's college basketball, some years recruiting booms, sometimes less so, unless your team wears some shade of blue. I just think we just havent hit this year like we were fortunate to the last two years, and that happens. I guess I never thought that landing two five stars a year was the new normal, but perhaps to many it became that
Yeah, probably an agree to disagree situation. I think its more likely than not the case, but its not inconceivable it happened. Doubt we'll know for certain everNever got a moment of contention from you, either. And you know me, by now. I'm not making it my expectation that we rake in 5* players hand over fist. I just find it odd that we have struck out on so many highly-ranked kids. It just seems like that with our increased profile and success, that such a dip in recruiting has to be sourced from somewhere. It seems too hard to believe that it "just happened". But, maybe I'm looking too hard to find a reason.
I will say, and mentioned it another thread, that Basilio nailed the information about the Davidson scrimmage with accurate detail. The supposed NIL struggles came from the same source(s) as I understood it. Just tough to imagine such accuracy from one report would lend itself to such a recklessly wild swing toward inaccuracy on the other. Perhaps his source is truly hit or miss.
I think The Dog had to sit out for a drug test.Yeah, probably an agree to disagree situation. I think its more likely than not the case, but its not inconceivable it happened. Doubt we'll know for certain ever
Wasn't there some hint that some kids had to sit out for a drug test? But now we see its an injury? Seems like I remember the Dog making a joke about it, or maybe somebody made a joke that the Dog was hanging out with the player
This is what I was saying earlier. People can hear a rumor from a dubious source and turn into chicken little, or they can look at the facts/realities of each recruitment and make their own conclusions. Until I actually see some evidence that the AD has screwed the pooch on NIL compared to other universities then it’s just another Tony B rumor.Hood-Schifino: we wouldn’t promise a starting PG spot.
Wallace: dream school was UK, they offered.
Phillips: LSU, nuff said.
Mitchell: starts dating a Texas bball commit
Udeh: Kansas beats us for a big man
Traore: Memphis/LSU, nuff said
I think, and have said the sane myself, that it’s just as likely (if not more likely) that we just missed on these guys regardless of NIL. Maybe we didn’t have an appealing enough NIL deal to sway them to us over the schools they chose but I don’t think we land any of them even if NIL isn’t in the picture.
Like I’ve also said it’s what happens when you recruit 5 stars abs swim with sharks…you look back at our 5 stars and most were either in state or we had a connection to. We were pulling 5 stars from California, or Texas, or Florida.

That's just it, though. Even if it is 100% accurate, you're likely never to hear any official confirmation of it, as admitting to it only paints Tennessee in a bad light. The proof is all in the controlling hands of the university unless a recruit comes out and explicitly states it in some form, which is probably equally as unlikely to happen .This is what I was saying earlier. Also w Phillips we were late to offer. LSU had offered over a year earlier than us
I think we’ll see if the recruits we lose end up w decent NIL dealsThat's just it, though. I made a joke that they were hanging out with TrippieRedd. Just a joke, but kids smoking weed in college is always a possibility, imoYeah, probably an agree to disagree situation. I think its more likely than not the case, but its not inconceivable it happened. Doubt we'll know for certain ever
