He would be wise to not choose Georgetown. Patrick Ewing will just ruin him.
It’s very rare for a great player to also be a great coach. Most great coaches are guys who got by on their understanding of the game and tenacity rather than physical attributes and the like. I think Ewing is just another one of those great player but mediocre coach examples. Larry Bird seems to be the only exception to this rule.

Seems like this kid has flown under the radar a little in terms of who we are recruiting but imo he is what we need. A highly rated but likely 3 t o 4 year guy. Good size, versatile type that could develop into an all american. Reminds me of some of the kids Baylor had that delivered a natty.

His comment about Florida is interesting in that he specifically mentions PG, if he’s looking to play that position primarily it’s hard to see him here.

He also referenced it when talking about Memphis. "Coach Penny played my position". Hardaway was a PG.

Maybe Barnes is promising competition at the PG position and allowing Edwards to also play off the ball. That's the only way I can see us still being in this thing, at this point. Too many ballhandlers is ne er a bad thing. I still think JHS's best spot is off the ball, but if he wants to be a PG, then you let him try it.

Yes, he has always been a PG, wasn't a good enough shooter to be a 2 and too soft to be a 3, at 6'7.
Edit: with all that being said, I thought he would be Magic 2.0, but I was wrong

To be fair, Penny was on a trajectory to being Magic 2.0 until injuries derailed his career in his 5th season. Up to that point he was 3x all NBA, all rookie his rookie year. 4x all star. People have really forgotten how great he was before he got hurt.

He was one of the best college players I’ve ever seen. I’d pay to watch him practice. No, he wasn’t “too soft” to be a 3 or not a good enough shooter to be a 2. He was just a tall guy with great vision and PG skills. Some of the passes he made at Memphis State were mind-blowing. He could dominate a game without scoring a ton.

Yeah, I remember, I liked Penny in college and at Orlando, I guess the recent rivalry with the Vols has made me sour on him. Wasn't it his knees that ended up making him a shell of the player, he was early in his career in Orlando ?

This. Penny was elite. The injuries and the divorce from Shaq were killers for him.

Growing up in Memphis, my Dad had season tickets. Penny was special and fun to watch. I recall going to the opening game at the Pyramid where they let DePaul (a conference opponent) play the first game to generate huge interest.

You can dog penny for being a poor coach and for balled up fists but he was a player in his day. No telling what he could have accomplished with better knees.

He made a play in the NCAAT...I think against Arkansas...where he got the ball a few feet from the basket, can't remember if it was a defensive rebound or inbounds pass, turned and made a full court bounce pass to a streaking teammate for a layup or dunk. The pass was between 2 or 3 defenders and to this day, I have no idea how he made it. One of the most unbelievable plays I've ever seen on a basketball court. He was unreal.

I wouldn’t call it a divorce. I mean I guess it was. More like Shaq left for the beautiful lady in LA lol

Yeah, I didn't mean that they weren't friendly as teammates. Probably not the greatest choice of terminology. "Split" would have been better. Shaq chased after Hollywood, a music career, and the lure and prestige of the Lakers, leaving Penny behind to fend for himself.
