Right-wing congressman Jair Bolsonaro won Brazil’s presidential election Sunday with 46 percent of the vote, but will have to face opponent and left-wing former Sao Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad in a runoff election after failing to receive a majority to win outright.

Bolsonaro, who has often been compared to U.S. President Donald Trump, began to rise in the polls after he was stabbed in the stomach at a campaign rally, a testament to how polarizing this election has been for Brazil.

Bolsonaro, a member of the Social Liberty party (PSL), was expected to win, however he edged out Haddad by a larger margin than expected, nearly 18 percentage points.

The former army captain has been referred to as the “Trump of the Tropics” for his provocative statements on several issues ranging from women to gun laws to abortion and immigration, but also for his ability to reach a similar base of Brazilians as Trump did Americans. “I voted for Bolsonaro because I’m tired of politicians being the same,” Maria Aparecida de Oliveira, a 63-year-old Brazilian housekeeper, told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Even if he is a little crazy, someone needs to bring change.”

In his victory speech, which he broadcasted live on Facebook and uploaded on Twitter, Bolsonaro said Brazilians could take the path of “prosperity, liberty, family, on God’s side” or the path of Venezuela.

Brazil’s neighboring socialist country of Venezuela has been suffering through a devastating economical collapse in recent months that has driven mass amounts of people out of the country, some headed to Brazil.

People all around the world are tired of the same old politicians.

People across the globe are subtly waking up to the corruptness...politicians whoring out their own people and country just to make themselves super rich...

People are starting to see that the super rich control the media, narrative...to keep people, countries at odds...

Common sense be damned...

He’s their next President.

Also, “Trump of the Tropics” is a misnomer. He’s more like Phillipines Duerte

He makes Trump look like a saint. At what point will the left realize that they are losing? Look at Orban in Hungary, Poland, Trump's victory, Brexit (though I'm not really counting that a victory anymore), Duerte (as you mentioned), the rise of the AfD in Germany, Italy's new populist government, and this?

They are still looking for an actual counter-argument to the movement other than "you are racist."

'No more Flirting with Communism': Brazil's new Tropical Trump president vows to 'change the country's destiny'... as Left-wing rivals immediately vow to vigorously oppose him

Controversial far-right candidate and ex-soldier Jair Bolsonaro has pledged to change Brazil's destiny in his fist public comments since his landslide victory.

Brazil's top electoral court confirmed the congressman's victory and Bolsonaro, 63, won with 55.5 per cent of the vote.

He becomes the new president of the world's fourth-largest democracy after dramatic swing from the left defeated Fernando Haddad, a former Sao Paulo mayor.

The new President said: 'We cannot continue flirting with socialism, communism, populism and leftist extremism ... We are going to change the destiny of Brazil.'

An outspoken admirer of U.S. President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro also pledged to realign Brazil with more advanced economies rather than regional allies, overhauling diplomatic priorities after nearly a decade and a half of leftist rule.

Trump called Bolsonaro to wish him well after his victory, forging closer bonds between the two largest nations in the Americas both now led by conservative populists promising to overturn the political establishment.

A former army captain, Bolsonaro is vowing to rescue the country from crisis with a firm grip.
He tapped into deep anti-establishment anger throughout the election campaign, but repulsed many with his denigrating remarks about women, gay and black people.
Bolsonaro's rise has been propelled by a rejection of the leftist PT that ran Brazil for 13 of the last 15 years before being ousted two years ago in the midst of a deep recession and political graft scandal.
Reacting to his victory in a video transmitted from his home in Rio de Janeiro, the new President recounted how he was stabbed while campaigning last month and almost died.

Bolsonaro, who ran on promises to clean up Brazil and bring back 'traditional values,' said he would respect the constitution and personal liberty.

Bolsonaro also vowed to defend 'constitution, democracy and freedom' in Brazil.

He said: 'I first want to thank God. This is not the promise of a party, nor the word of a man. It is an oath before God.

Donald Trump's fault? The left isn't blaming Trump for the stabbing, but they're blaming him for the stabbing?
