New distribution to provide NWSL fans unprecedented viewing across linear and streaming each weekend, and significant brand marketing investment

NEW YORK (Nov. 9, 2023) – The National Women's Soccer League announced today landmark agreements for its domestic media distribution with 118 national windows on CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video and Scripps Sports. The four-year contract with each partner will generate record-breaking distribution and revenue for the league while maximizing a mix of linear and digital streaming distribution. Endeavor’s IMG and WME Sports advised the NWSL and negotiated on its behalf.

β€œThese partnerships fundamentally change the game for our league and the players who take the pitch each week. On behalf of the NWSL, our owners and players, I want to commend CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video and Scripps for investing in our league and affirmatively declaring to the marketplace that this league is exciting, valuable, and important,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. β€œWe have taken great care to ensure our games are discoverable by increasing our reach in order to expose new audiences to everything that makes our league special, without compromising the economic value of our product. This is the beginning of our future.”

Beginning in 2024, 118 matches will be distributed across the following partner platforms:
  • The NWSL will begin each regular-season weekend with Friday night matches on Prime Video.
  • Each Saturday night that follows will include a double-header on Scripps’-owned ION network, available over-the-air in 123 million homes.
  • A package of regular season matches will air on The CBS Television Network and stream live on Paramount+, with additional matches airing on CBS Sports Network.
  • ESPN will air a package of matches across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN Deportes (Spanish). All NWSL matches on ESPN platforms and on ABC will stream live on ESPN+in English and Spanish. The package also includes English, Spanish and Portuguese-language rights in Latin America.

The remainder of the NWSL regular-season schedule will be part of a domestic direct-to-consumer package produced and distributed by the NWSL, building on the league’s 2023 season international direct-to-consumer platform which has proven successful. All matches, regardless of where they appear, will have consistent and up-leveled production quality due to increased, and uniform, investment across all platforms.

For the NWSL playoffs, set to expand in 2024 with the addition of Bay FC and the Utah Royals, Prime Video and CBS will have the rights to one quarterfinal each, while ESPN/ABC will air the other two quarterfinals. CBS and ESPN/ABC will each have a semifinal.

CBS Sports, in its fourth year in partnership with the NWSL, continues as the home of the NWSL Championship match each season in primetime on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

ION will air the NWSL Draft live in January. That date will be announced in the future.

In addition to each partner’s investment in the league and showcasing its matches, all have made significant commitments to marketing and promoting the NWSL, and importantly, cross-marketing each other’s scheduled broadcasts.

In addition to each partner’s investment in the league and showcasing its matches, all are committed to marketing and promoting the NWSL and its availability across platforms.

β€œWe’re thrilled to extend our relationship with the NWSL, continuing as the home of the NWSL Championship and offering an expanded slate of matches on CBS as we build on the success of the last four years,” said Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports. β€œExtending this partnership further demonstrates our commitment to elevating women’s sports as we continue to work hand-in-hand with the NWSL to highlight the world’s best women’s soccer players. As we prepare to present the 2023 NWSL Championship this weekend, we are excited to continue to showcase this league across our platforms for years to come and remain the ultimate destination for soccer fans.”

MATCH CENTRAL: Lady Vols at #17 Xavier

IMG_4713.jpeg

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tennessee is set to make its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance on Saturday, traveling to fourth-seeded Xavier for the NCAA First Round at 4 p.m. ET.

UT enters the NCAA Tournament as an unseeded at-large bid with a record of 8-6-4 and an RPI ranking of 32.

Xavier earned a No. 4 seed as an at-large bid with a record of 14-3-4, having posted a record of 6-0-4 in conference play to finish with a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title. The Musketeers are currently sitting at No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 19 in the RPI and are coming off a 2-0 loss to Georgetown in the championship match of the BIG EAST Tournament.

The teams have met seven times previously, including the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season when XU took a 4-1 win in double overtime. Overall, the Lady Vols hold a 4-3-0 advantage in the series.

UP NEXT: The winner advances to the NCAA Second Round to be held on Nov. 17 at campus sites.

TENNESSEE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: UT will be making its third straight and 15th overall NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001. Tennessee has a 16-12-3 record in the tournament and has reached the NCAA Round of 16 seven times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2018, 2021). The Big Orange is 9-4-1 in first-round matches but is looking for its first win when opening the tournament on a seeded opponent's home turf.
TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE: Eight active members of the Lady Vols roster saw action in last year's NCAA Tournament against Xavier, and four took the field with the 2021 squad that defeated Lipscomb and No. 15 Washington State to advance to the NCAA Round of 16.

SCOUTING XU: The Musketeers have tallied 34 goals through 21 matches and average 17.5 shots per game. On offense, they are led in scoring and points by junior midfielder Samantha Wiehe who earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors with seven goals and six assists on the year. On defense, Natalie Bain was named All-Big EAST First Team.

IN THEIR OFFENSIVE THIRD: On the season, UT has taken nearly 100 more shots than its opponents, outshooting teams 276-179, and taking 127 corner kicks while limiting the opposition to just 66. Tennessee currently ties for 11th in Division I in corner kicks per game (7.00).

ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: Junior Jordan Fusco was named First Team All-SEC, graduate Sizzy Lawton made Second Team All-SEC, and freshman Kate Runyon landed on the SEC All-Freshman Team. A 2021 SEC All-Freshman Team performer, Fusco has amassed six goals and four assists during her junior campaign to rank second on the team in total points with 16. Lawton has appeared in every match for Tennessee, starting nine and recording six goals and two assists to rank third on the team in points with 14. Runyon has had a standout rookie campaign for the Big Orange, scoring in her first contest as a Lady Vol and appearing in 14 matches while starting nine before missing time due to injury.

So far no upsets today.
If we do get by Xavier, our next opponent will be Nebraska.

Number 1 seed UCLA is struggling, down 0-1 to UC Irvine with 3 minutes left. Additionally, UC Irvine is only playing with 10.

This is huge, especially since the Lady Vols are in the UCLA bracket.

RE Runyon: Wasn't she in some of the photos above when the players are getting their new treads? She didn't appear to have any wraps or braces
on her knees or legs, looked in good spirits. Hope she can play--and Hofmann too. It's annoying that there is radio silence about college injuries. Maybe it's the privacy things--and, if so, it seems to be way overdone.

UCLA losing is a real shocker.

UCLA has been upset twice in the past three years in first round of the NCAA tournament, both times by IC Irvine. I think they’re a great soccer program, but they historically underperform this time of year.
