KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee posted its second straight shutout on Sunday, defeating Tennessee Tech in Regal Stadium, 7-0.

The Lady Vols (2-2-1) scored early and often against the Golden Eagles (1-3-2), netting seven goals on the night. Sophomore Jordan Fusco carded a brace while fifth-year seniors Abbey Burdette and Mackenzie George, redshirt-junior Jaida Thomas, sophomore Taylor Huff and freshman Macaira Midgley each added one.

In goal, three Tennessee keepers split time, with senior Lindsey Romig getting the start and earning two saves, redshirt-freshman Ally Zazzara playing the first 25 minutes of the second half, and junior MacKenzie Haba closing out the contest with two saves.

Tennessee Tech tallied eight shots on the night, four of which were on goal.

"We talked about the tempo and the standard before we went out there tonight. We had two separate halves in Bowling Green. In the first half, we were slow and a little bit chaotic. And then moving to the second half, we really picked up the tempo and were more urgent," said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt.

"We talked about it before the game asking, 'Which team is going to show up (tonight) and what standard are you guys going to hold yourself to? Are we going to be the first half team from Wednesday or the second half?' And today it was the second half. They were focused and ready to go from the first five minutes, and they were dialed in."

Fusco was first to strike for the Lady Vols, netting her first goal of the season three and a half minutes into the game when she ran onto a ball at the top of the box and sent a one-touch blast into the lower right corner of the net.

Thirty seconds later Huff added another, beating three TTU defenders to send a left-footed shot low and past the keeper from close range.

Burdette added her first goal of the year in the 27th minute, slotting a ball into the net off a corner kick from senior Claudia Dipasupil.

UT's last goal of the half came three minutes later when Thomas knocked down a cross from George and volleyed a shot into the top right corner from 12 yards out.

Fusco opened the scoring in the second half as well, sending a blast far post from 22 yards out off a pass from Thomas in the 53rd minute.

Three minutes later George got a head on a cross from redshirt-junior Maria Nelson to log her first goal of the year.

Midgley rounded out the scoring for Tennessee, netting her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute with a laser into the upper right corner of the goal from 20 yards out.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols will play their fifth straight home game on Thursday, welcoming Kennesaw State for a 6:30 p.m. ET matchup. The contest will be streamed on SECN+.

TRACKING THOMAS: Redshirt-junior Jaida Thomas has now tallied five goals over the last four games, moving her career total to 30. She stands alone at third on UT's all-time career goals list, trailing No. 2 Hannah Wilkinson by three and No. 1 Kylee Rossi by 13.

JUST HUFF THINGS: Through the four games in which she's been active, sophomore Taylor Huff has racked up three goals and two assists. The 2021 SEC Freshman of the Year has taken 15 shots, 10 of which have been on frame.

Lady Vols Soccer Cruises to an Emphatic 7-0 Victory Against Tennessee Tech

By Dominic Throngard

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- The Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team (2-2-1) cruised to a landslide 7-0 victory against Tennessee Tech’s Golden Eagles (1-2-3) on Sunday night at Regal Soccer Stadium.

The Lady Vols started off extremely hot with two goals coming in the first five minutes of action, barely giving fans any time to get settled in their seats. The rest of the first half saw pure dominance in the midfield from the Lady Vols as they racked up two more to bring the game to 4-0 at half.

Jordan Fusco, the sophomore from Olmsted Township, Ohio, secured a brace with both of her goals coming from just a hair outside the eighteen yard box. Freshman Macaira Midgley also netted her first collegiate goal. The rest of the goals were provided one a piece from Jaida Thomas, Abbey Burdette, Mackenzie George, and Taylor Huff.

Jaida Thomas continues to solidify herself in the school’s record books with her goal adding to her climb to the top of Tennessee’s all time scoring list. Her goal on Sunday could perhaps be an early contender for Lady Vols goal of the season as it came off of a half turn volley from near the eighteen yard box.

This game was marked by extremely impressive play from the Lady Vols who held clear control of the midfield the entire match. Crafty passing allowed for good possession as the team worked down the field to enable their players to make runs down the wing and cross back into the box. This tactic provided a lion’s share of the Lady Vols' scoring opportunities enabling them to wear down the Golden Eagles and rack up goals.

This performance shows marked improvement from the Lady Vols' slow season start as the team seems to begin to mesh under new head coach Joe Kirt’s leadership. His tactical vision seemed to finally start to click with the players, as they showed continued improvement from their previous 4-0 victory over Bowling Green. The team looked more confident and kept their shape well.

The Lady Vols will play Kennesaw State next at Regal Soccer Stadium on Thursday night 6:30 P.M. EST.

Great to see Vignola is back, both are doing pregame warmups.

You can't take a lot from a win over Tennessee Tech, but I was impressed with finishing of the Vols. Thomas's goal was very impressive; Fusco
had two nicely struck goals--both hit with pace, kept low and well placed; and Midgley's belter into the net was an eye-opener.

Some things continue to concern me: The Vols rarely switch the field of play, which good teams do--moving the ball from one side of the field where a lot of opponent defenders are gathered, to the other side where there are fewer defenders. I think we did it one time last night. Also, a lot of our passing is a bit predictable--paint by numbers--and my worries about the vulnerability of the defense in the 3-5-2 setup continue. Claire Rain and Katz are very good at getting forward with the ball--and like to do it, given that it was a big part of their roles as outside backs last year. However, when, say, Rain gets into the attacking half with the ball, we're left with Zalusky and Renie to defend if we lose the ball and the opponent counter-attacks--as happened early last night when TT got a shot on goal. Zaluski isn't very speedy, and Renie's pace is decent but not great. It's one thing to lose the ball and see TT counter-attacking; when it happens against SEC opponents, it could be more problematic. But we won't know until we start playing SEC games, so we'll see.

The best thing about games like this is that everybody gets some good game experience. Always a good thing....
