⚽️Lady Vols Soccer Thread

It was pretty obvious early on. It will get more obvious as the ladies play stronger opponents. I agree with building around a core of Burdette, Huff and Fusco. But, some rearranging would be prudent if they want to reach this team’s true potential. And that potential is very high, imo.

Yes, we've shown we can win--though not always convincingly--against average/decent teams. Can we beat good teams with this 3-back system that Kirt seems strangely attached to? We'll find out over the next couple of weeks. The 3-back does put Huff in the middle of the field and gives he more room to make runs--yet we're not scoring more goals with the 3-back. We scored 4 goals against Kentucky but one was an own-goal and two came late in the game, and Kentucky will finish last in the conference. We scored one against Ole Miss and two against Missouri--the second coming in the last minute of the game. Defensively, we simply were stronger last year with Katz and Rain at outside back with Renie and French at centerback.

Katz and Rain were quite a bit better outside than Dipasupil and Nelson are now. In the North Carolina game this year, Nelson was not good and in the second half UNC gave us major problems on her and Katz's side of the field. Last year Dipasupil (and Zaluski) played outside on the left--but they didn't have to cover as much territory along the touchline as they do now--and, importantly, they had Rain behind them offering huge defensive cover. Rain is still providing cover on the left--but she's got to cover a lot more of the field now herself-- as usually one of our 3 centerbacks has ventured forward. One problem with Nelson is that if she's gotten forward, well into our attacking half, and we lose the ball, she does not have the pace to get back defensively--and that's a problem. Any outside position requires pace. She is not slow--but she is not speedy, and if you watch when we lose the ball on her side of the field when she's forward, the opponent has acres of space to move forward and Huff or Fusco have to chase back and cover that side of the field.

I would have liked to see if Hennessey could play either Katz's spot in the 3-back or have her take French's spot, pairing with Renie, and roll with the same 4-4-2 we used last year. THAT is that I thought I'd see this season--why mess with something that worked so well--but Kirt has not only stuck with the 3-back but stuck with the same starting group all season--except for the bama game, when the coaches opted to start Hennessey and Midgley as our outside mids. Hennessey, sure--she plays a lot as outside mid now in relief of Nelson--but putting Midgley on the left didn't make any sense. Coach Morgan said the other day, in a Daily Beacon story, that the coaches "overthought" the tactics. They perhaps over-thought the personnel, but the formation was the same, I believe.

It's all moot: Kirt is sticking with the 3-back, and we'll see how we fare. I hope well!

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 19 Tennessee heads to Athens for a matchup with Georgia at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game will be televised on SEC Network.

The Lady Vols (8-3-1, 4-1 SEC) are riding a three-game win streak, having most recently shut out Missouri at home on Thursday in a 2-0 victory. In that game, UT went up 1-0 in the 57th minute when Taylor Huff scored her fourth goal of the season, placing a header into the side net off a cross from Claudia Dipasupil. Tennessee got its final goal in the 88th minute when Mackenzie George worked through a host of Tiger defenders on the baseline before crossing the ball through to Jaida Thomas who redirected it into the back of the net.

Georgia (4-5-2, 1-2-1 SEC) comes to Knoxville on the heels of a 1-1 tie at Vanderbilt on Thursday.

The Lady Vols own an 18-9-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Bulldogs. The teams last met on Oct. 24, 2021, when UT won 3-1 in Regal Stadium.

UP NEXT: Tennessee will return home to host LSU on Friday in a 7 p.m. ET contest that will be streamed on SECN+.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: UGA went 11-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in conference games last season. The Bulldogs return six starters and 17 letterwinners from the 2021 squad and were picked to tie for sixth in the SEC as voted on by the league's coaches.

TOP-10 NUMBERS: UT has scored 36 goals on the year to tie for sixth in the country in scoring offense at 3.00. The Lady Vols rank eighth in points per game (8.67) and shots on goal per game (9.33), and are fifth in corner kicks per game (7.67).

TRACKING THOMAS: Jaida Thomas has scored goals in three straight games, moving her season total to 11 and career total to 36 to pull within seven goals of tying Kylee Rossi at No. 1 all-time in career goals scored at UT.

HAPPY TO ASSIST: With her assist against Mizzou, Mackenzie George has now logged an assist in three straight matches, tying Taylor Huff to lead the team in assists at five on the season.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING: The Lady Vols lead the SEC in goals per game (3.00) and corner kicks per game (7.67) and are second in assists per game (2.67) and shots per game (18.58)

KEEPING IT CLEAN: Tennessee has committed the fewest fouls of any team in the SEC, averaging just 6.58 fouls per game. Arkansas ranks highest in fouls per game at 11.08.

WEEKLY HONORS: Two Lady Vols earned SEC Player of the Week honors following UT's 1-0 victory at #13 Ole Miss. Jaida Thomas, who saw 79 minutes of action and scored the game-winner, was named Offensive Player of the Week, and Lawson Renie was named Defensive Player of the Week for her 90-minute effort anchoring the Tennessee back line as they shut out previously undefeated Ole Miss, limiting them to just three shots on goal.

TENNESSEE ON TOP: The Lady Vols were picked to finish first in the SEC as voted on by the conference's 14 head coaches. UT is coming off a 2021 campaign in which it won a program-best 20 games, clinching an SEC Tournament Championship and going 20-3 en route to the NCAA Round of 16.

No. 19 UT Shuts Out Georgia, 2-0

ATHENS, Ga. – No. 19 Tennessee picked up its fourth straight win on Sunday, taking a 2-0 victory at Georgia.

It was the third shutout in a row for the Lady Vols who have outscored opponents 9-1 over the last four matches.

Senior Claudia Dipasupil and redshirt-junior Jaida Thomas found the net for UT (9-3-1, 5-1 SEC), with fifth-year senior Mackenzie George and sophomore Taylor Huff earning assists. In goal, senior Lindsey Romig made three saves on the day.

Goalkeeper Liz Beardsley logged three saves for Georgia (8-5-1, 2-3-1 SEC).

"It was a great team win on the road today against an organized, competitive Georgia team. We got better as the game went on, and our composure on the ball resulted in some good chances in the second half that we were able to put away," said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt.

"Jon (Morgan) asked our team during our pregame meeting to get numbers in the box and hunt for rebounds, so credit to him and Claudia (Dipasupil) for winning the fight to tuck away the first goal. And finding the second shortly thereafter was crucial with Taylor (Huff) very unselfishly slotting a perfect ball across for Jaida (Thomas) to put the game away. The energy our players brought from the sidelines was tangible and was a huge lift for us. We've had three straight shutouts because this team takes a ton of pride in their defending, and it shows."

The Bulldogs mounted an attack beginning at the midfield nine minutes into play when Mallie McKenzie drove down the left side of the field to the baseline before attempting to cross the ball through the middle for trailing attackers, but Romig got off her line to intercept the pass.

In the 18th minute, Maria Nelson played a beautiful ball on the ground for Thomas to run onto in UT's attacking third, forcing a Georgia defender to slide to knock the ball over the end line and give UT its first corner kick of the contest.

Thomas recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 27th minute, one-touching a cross from Dipasupil at the net, but Beardsley was there to make the save.

Georgia got its first shot on goal just before the half, when Jada Gibson sent in a harmless ball from 25 yards out that was easily collected by Romig, and the teams headed into the locker room with the game knotted at zero.

Fifteen minutes into the second half the Lady Vols got an excellent look when Nelson made a run down the right wing and cut back from the baseline to find George at the top of the box who turned her defender and fired off a shot, but it missed inches to the left.

The Lady Vols ramped up the pressure, earning a corner kick in the 67th minute which fifth-year senior Abbey Burdetteheaded directly at the side netting, but Cecily Stoute was on the line to block the shot as well as the follow-up by Huff.

UT got on the board in the 77th minute when Thomas took a shot at close range that was deflected back out into the box, and Dipasupil ran onto the ball and fired it into the back of the net.

The second goal came less than a minute later, with George and Huff working the ball down the left side of the field before Huff crossed the ball into Thomas who made the finish.

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols return home for a 7 p.m. ET matchup against LSU on Friday that will be streamed on SECN+.

DIPASUPIL HEATING UP: Claudia Dipasupil's goal against Georgia marks her third of the season, all of which have come in SEC play. She has scored those three goals on just five shots, all of which were on frame, for a shot percentage of .600 and a shot-on-goal percentage of 1.00 in conference games. She ties with Jaida Thomas to lead UT in total points in SEC play with nine (3 goals/3 assists).

HAPPY TO ASSIST: With her assist against Georgia, Mackenzie George has now logged an assist in four straight matches, tying Taylor Huff to lead the team in assists at six on the season.

TRACKING THOMAS: Redshirt-junior Jaida Thomas continues to inch closer to the top of the record book, moving her career total to 37 goals to trail No. 1 Kylee Rossi by just six goals.

AS THOMAS GOES, SO DOES TENNESSEE: Thomas has now scored in four straight contests and leads UT in total points with 26 on the season. For her career, she has accumulated 82 points on 37 goals and eight assists. Thomas has appeared in 51 games for UT, during which time the Lady Vols are 28-1-1 in games in which she has tallied at least one point. In matches when she hasn't recorded a point, UT is 9-11-1.

Good win today. We struggled a bit in the first 15 minutes or so. Georgia played a high line and put us on the back foot early on; the dawgs spent a lot of time in our defensive half, but we kept them from getting any good shots on our goal. As the half went on we grew into the game, had more possession, but other than 2/3 corners and a weak SOG by Thomas, didn't really test the Georgia keeper.

In the second half we came out with more urgency, had more possession, and started to put some real pressure on the Georgia goal. Had a few more corners and actually got a good header on one of them and, from that, nearly scored. Just before the 80' mark we finally broke through on a nice turn and shot in the box by Thomas, which the Georgia keeper deflected away, but Dipasupil was close to goal, pounced on the rebound and put it in the net for the game-winning goal. About a minute later we scored again on some good combination play on the left side in our attacking half--a nice layoff to Huff, who drove toward the left-side of the box and delivered a perfect centering pass in front of goal, where Thomas tapped it past the Georgia keeper for our second goal.

There's no question that we're playing better defensively than we were earlier in the year. We still have some shaky moments when trying to play the ball out of the back, and Katz makes a few too many bad passes, but on the whole we've tightened things up on the defensive end. Offensively, we haven't been great but our toughness and general will to win--our mentality-- has carried us in recent games. We have more talent and experience than our last three opponents, if we're honest, and we've been helped by the fact that, based on what I've seen, none of our last three opponents has any special attacking talent. Still, we've done what good teams do--play well when you have to, and credit to our players for three straight shutouts.

Huff was good and tireless, as usual. Burdette was good, Rain and Renie were good, Dipasupil has been playing well. We have to keep winning if we want to have any chance of getting a seed in the NCAA; right now, we're still not in the top 25 for RPI, and we'd have to get up into the top 16, probably, to get even a 4 seed. We still have 4 challenging SEC games ahead, starting with Lsu, which looked good when I saw them play a couple of weeks ago but they got waxed by bama today. The tide has been scoring bunches of goals on everybody. They've got some players that are sneaky talented shooters when in or around the box. Onward!

Chris Henderson

There's always some weirdness in the RPI--and this week's weirdness seems to be Chris Henderson having Texas A&M at No. 25--the
same A&M that just won its first SEC game and is now 1-4-1 in the conference. A&M is 7-5-3 overall--and its best performances to date, I suppose,
are ties with Clemson and Ohio State, who are also both in the Henderson's RPI Top 25. Truth be told, those two ties might be better than anything we've done so far. Going into yesterday, Ole Miss was our best win--but Ole Miss has since lost 2 more games (so 3 losses in a row for the Rebels), which has diminished any RPI boost we got from that win. A&M has played a tougher SEC schedule than we have as well--though until yesterday it had lost all of its tougher SEC matches (bama and arkansas, to name two). We just don't have any real good wins--yet. Right now we're a longshot to get a NCAA seed, but if we keep winning we could yet pull it off.

I wish we'd stop playing 2 exhibition games to start the season. I don't see the point in playing two. We won both our exhibitions--Notre Dame and then Dayton--and even the Dayton match counted it would have helped our RPI as Dayton is having a very good season.

Romig Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

F9F0F1B1-E4F6-4CD3-A2FA-C37F1180B37C.jpeg

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Romig was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league's office on Monday.

Romig posted two clean sheets last week as Tennessee defeated Missouri and Georgia with a score of 2-0 in both matches. She faced 21 shots and recorded seven saves between the two games.

The Lady Vols have now recorded three straight shutouts and seven shutouts on the season. In SEC games, she ties with Ashley Orkus of Ole Miss for first in the league in saves per game with 5.00, and she is third in save percentage at .833.

For her career, Romig has logged 24 shutouts to rank third all-time in program history. She currently sits at third in the Tennessee record book with a save percentage of .803, and her career goals-against average of .940 ranks fourth.

It is Romig's second SEC weekly honor of the season and fourth overall, having been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this year following a career-high nine saves in UT's 2-1 win at Florida.

Tennessee continues SEC play on Friday, hosting LSU in a 7 p.m. ET contest at Regal Stadium. The game will be streamed on SECN+.

This is worth a read.....He has our current RPI at #27. Has us as a potential 6 seed, apparently. Doesn't have us as a projected 1-4 seed, but we might be able to change that if we keep winning. We'd probably have to win our last 4 SEC games--and most certainly beat South Carolina, which has a high RPI currently--and make a run in the SEC tourney.
