More Than 1,400 SEC Student-Athletes Earn Degrees



BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 11, 2022) ----- More than 1,400 current and former student-athletes at Southeastern Conference universities earned degrees during the 2021-22 academic year.

A total of 1,131 SEC student-athletes graduated from their respective universities during the month of May, following 339 graduates in the fall. Each of the SEC's 21 sponsored sports is represented among the graduates, and student-athletes of several non-sponsored SEC sports also earned their degrees.

Any of these graduates who did not exhaust their eligibility will wear the SEC Graduation Patch in competition next year. The 2021-22 academic year marked the sixth year of the SEC Graduate Patch initiative, where the SEC logo patch on graduates' uniforms is replaced with a special patch with the word "Graduate" underneath the conference logo. The SEC Graduation Patch was worn by more than 675 student-athletes during the 2021-22 academic year.

Oh, my: I wrote up a bit on Abbey Burdette and then accidentally deleted it before posting. Here's another go at it....


Abbey Burdette: 5th year, defensive midfielder:

There were a few reasons why the Vols put together one of the best seasons ever last year--and a big one was the switch of Burdette from outside back to defensive mid. Burdette's skill set is simply not ideal for outside back, where she played for the better part of two seasons; she doesn't have enough pace (speed) to run up and down the field and cover speedy opposing forwards. She was respectable, but you want //good// at every position--and good is what UT got when the coaches made her a holding midfielder. It was a smart decision.

The prototypical defensive mid is athletic, physical, has a very strong work rate and can contribute to the attack when she has the ball. A defensive mid must challenge opposing players with the ball--and win those challenges--and Burdette is very good at that. She tirelessly anchored our defense in the middle of the field, slowed opposing attacks with her strong, physical play and provided excellent cover for our centerbacks. She was one of the team's leaders, and I believe she led the team in minutes played last year, which is an indication of how valuable she was. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the SEC tournament.

Her weakness, IMO, is that her passing can be a bit sloppy and errant at times, though that was more evident early in the season as opposed to late. As the season progressed, she showed more poise with the ball, made better decisions, was more precise with her passing and was a contributor to our attack.

What to expect this year? The coaches will want More of the Same from Burdette. With two mostly inexperienced centerbacks behind her, her defensive presence and leaderhship will be vital to UT's prospects this year--especially with some very good non-conference opponents on the schedule. She is the type of player that every good team needs.

Congratulations to VFL Amy Harrison, new assistant coach at FC Nordsjællands Kvindeliga, a Danish women's football club based in Farum, Denmark. The club is currently playing in the Danish top division, the Elitedivisionen.

First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll Announced



Birmingham, Ala. - A total of 1,045 student-athletes were named to the 2021-22 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll, Thursday by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.

The First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2021-22 academic calendar.

Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution's NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria will be followed: (1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. (2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. (3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. (4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. (5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.

First year student-athletes in all sports may be named to the Honor Roll at the conclusion of their first full academic year in residence (spring, fall and summer terms).
