they also said D.J Fluker had trouble blocking him when he lined at DE. He looks alot faster than what his 40 time says.

Newest ESPN article gives DT alot of praise. Kiffin had better talked to him.

Stealing the spotlight
In addition to the play of Alabama’s ESPNU 150 prospects several other players deserve some recognition. The Alabama defensive line made it very tough for Mississippi to run the ball or have to time to throw and two players -- Darrius McMullin and D.T. Shackelford (Decatur, Ala. / Austin) -- were a big reason for that. Shackelford, projected as a linebacker in college, played defensive end in the game and while there are some concerns about his size for the next level, he put on a show at this one. It seemed like whenever he was in the game, he was around the ball and causing problems. Despite not having a tall frame, he has a solid reach and uses his hands well. He slipped between blockers and spent a lot of time in the Mississippi backfield. He struggles some to hold his ground when blockers could get into him, but overall his effort and play was very impressive and his grade jumped some. New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has parted ways with a few recruits that Phil Fulmer recruited, but he may want to give Shackelford, a Tennessee commit, a shot.

I guess. It sure doesn't seem that DT was a top priority by any means.

Barry Every (of Rivals) called DT the "Energizer Bunny" pass rusher. DJ Fluker was praised for his ability to stop DT and Fluker is the #2 OT in the nation! We definitely need to keep this guy and Schofield.

I agree. He will be a big addition as the two lines are areas of big need.

But all I've heard is that he's all Vol. I'm not sure whether Kiffin himself has contacted the kid (I would assume so), but from reading this thread it seems like he was reassured by the new staff.

Plus, who in his position wouldn't want to play for Monte? :)

DE D.T. SHACKELFORD (6-1/220), Decatur Austin
733458.jpg
COMMITTED TO: Tennessee, but may visit Ole Miss, Arkansas and LSU.
PERFORMANCE: Recorded three tackles and one sack, and had a fumble recovery.
STRENGTHS: Has an extremely high motor, and does a nice job of keeping his feet moving after being engaged.
WEAKNESSES: If he is to play defensive end at the next level, he will have to add 15 to 20 more pounds and continue to get stronger. If he is to be a linebacker, he will need to work on moving in space.

He's the perfect size for a Monte LB. If he can cover at all he'll see the field.

Yup, he keeps looking better. Kudos to Chief for looking getting this commit early.

If Chavis goes to LSU though, we may be in trouble.

This week has been a good one for Shackleford as the 6-foot-1, 225 pound three star finally heard from Vol head coach Lane Kiffin ... at least his family has.

"Coach Kiffin and my dad talked today," Shackelford said. "I didn't get a chance to visit him, but it was good that he called. He told my dad that he liked my film and he likes that I am a versatile player. My dad liked coach Kiffin. I hope to get to talk to coach Kiffin soon."

Shackelford has also heard from others since his performance in last weekend's all-star game.

"Ole Miss, Arkansas, LSU and Auburn have all called," Shackelford said. "Ole Miss, Arkansas and LSU had called me some before the game. Auburn called for the first time this week."

Shackelford committed to Tennessee on August 1st and remains a Tennessee commitment, but he is also going to see a few other places.

Shackelford also wants to get to know new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, who he has known about for years.

"He is the father of the Tampa two," Shackelford said. "We ran some of it in high school. I played defensive end, outside linebacker, and middle linebacker. That system has a lot of flexibility. They turn the speed rushers loose and the middle linebacker is really important."

Watched highlights of the Ala.- Miss. All star game and they said UT would have to work real hard to keep him. 3* is underrating this guy

Local papers had articles about Shackelford not hearing from CLK and seem to imply that he was getting nervous or at the least questioning why he hadn't heard from the new coach sooner.

Kiffin just talked to his dad a couple of days ago. That is likely old information. I hear DT is still talking about looking around though.

He should look around and weigh all his options. He is a smart and disciplined young man and will find a program that fits him the best, now that he might have some more options.

I wish him the best and hope he ends up a Volunteer in the end!

Decatur (Ala.) Austin linebacker D.T. Shackelford, a Tennessee commitment since August, will take four official visits in the month of January with his first coming next weekend to Auburn.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Shackelford will also visit Ole Miss Jan. 16-18 as well as LSU and Tennessee. He has yet to set a date for either LSU or Tennessee, but plans to soon.

Shackelford, ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 17 overall prospect in the state, spoke to new Tiger head coach Gene Chizik and assistant James Willis recently.

"I talked to them right before the (Recruiting) Dead Period," said Shackelford. "It went really good. They were saying that they would love to have me there, that they liked the kind of person I am.

"Coach Chizik said he wanted to get to know me, but he had heard about me in the (Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic) and that I also had a good senior season. He said he wants to meet with me."

Shackelford said he would visit four schools before making an ultimate decision.
Shackelford said he's done research on the Tigers' new head coach and so far has liked what he's seen and heard.

"I know he had one of the best defenses at Auburn the year he left. His history on the defensive side of the ball is real strong." said Shackelford. "I know a great university like Auburn wouldn't hire just anybody. They are going to hire somebody who knows what they're doing, knows what they're talking about.

"From all I've heard, he's a great person and a great coach. I feel like he could change it around at Auburn."

In addition to Chizik, Shackelford has been in contact with coaches from Tennessee, LSU and Ole Miss. He said he would sign with one of the four on Signing Day.

"Right now I'm committed to Tennessee, but I'm still looking at Auburn, Ole Miss and LSU," he said. "All four of those schools I have high interest in. They're all great schools. You can't go wrong with any of them.

"I'll take my visits and then make my ultimate decision on where I want to go on Signing Day."

I don't understand why players even commit anymore.

I've been following recruiting since the late '90s and I don't think anything has changed. These are high school kids we're talking about. They are easily swayed and change their minds just as quickly.

the only change is that there is so much more scrutiny now. with rivals and scout, etc, these kids every thoughts are made public and dissected to no end.
