Daniel Hood has never been prone to rush into a decision.
With his college choice looming, the defensive end from Knoxville Catholic High School isn’t going to start now.
The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Hood has scholarship offers from Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia Tech and Louisville. He’s also received interest from Ole Miss and Colorado.
Hood, who’s grown up a UT fan, could have easily committed to the Vols as soon as they offered last month.
Hood decided instead to weigh his options to find the school that fits him best.

If we cant get this kid, then we're in rough shape. In Texas kids are beating down the door to commit to Mack Brown and we cant even get a lifelong Vol to go ahead and pull the trigger.

I think he'll come around. But, that is pretty sad. In SI this week they had an awesome article about Nebraska and the "hard working hometown boys" just dying to play for the Huskers.

Well I don't understand this phenomena either. You and dare I say, newcoach, both bring up good points with Texas and Nebraska. I wish I knew the answer. Maybe its there is so many great prospects in Texas and we just don't notice the ones that get away, and that kids in Nebraska are just brainwashed to death. If not, then I'll just go ahead and blame it on ESPN.

any highly recruited kid that doesn't take all his visits is really shorting himself IMO.

If Texas kids don't commit early, Texas pulls their offer. That's how they do things (for the most part)

I know that's how we got Creer. I just dont understand why we struggle to get commits from guys that grew up Tennessee fans.

The way I see it, they want to be the cool kids that go out-of-state.

If I were a recruit, I'd make sure I took all my visits so I wouldn't declare early.

I don't really know why though.

I see committed guys take visits all the time. Why is it cool for our kids to go out of state and cool for the Texas fans to stay in?

Not saying Tennessee isn't a nice state b/c its where I've always wanted to be, but Texas is a pretty awesome state. The chicks are hot, there are tons of people, and plenty places to visit. It's like its only little country. I'm prob not helping much. I think there is no tangible answer to your question.

Texas would be Tejas without Tennessee.

The Vols haven't had much good buzz in recent years, with their mediocre play, and that may be one reason. Also, the southeast/south is loaded with appealing programs, whereas there isn't much going on out nebraska way AT ALL.

I just think that it has become a habit at Knoxville Catholic....

...it's like.."do you want to go over to the Hill (like a bunch of others from your class)..that's cool...but [Fill in Name Here] went to ND last year for football..that's pretty sweet...I'd love to get out of this town..but I guess I'll go to UT." It's hometown syndrome or something. I don't know what's in the water over there...

what does Texas, Florida, FSU, UM, and the rest do that allows them to lock down their hometown guys? find out and duplicate it. the article on govols about former players coming back really saddened me. why dont we have some kind of formal effort to get these guys back on campus once or twice a year? Shouldnt that be just SOP?

How aggressively to we recruit these kids out of Knox Catholic? Does anyone think we recruit so hard out of state that we leave our in state guys wondering?

I think any Catholic kid has Notre Dame at the top of their list regardless of what state they're from

not really, I grew up going to St Joe's and then Father Ryan. Most of the guys at my schools couldnt care less about ND.
