Okay, then I don't know why those kids don't come to Tennessee.

maybe you call some of the local talent (like Hood) and write about it. sound like a great article. start with Leroy Thompson, ask Warren or Redd why they left, etc.

what does Texas, Florida, FSU, UM, and the rest do that allows them to lock down their hometown guys? find out and duplicate it. the article on govols about former players coming back really saddened me. why dont we have some kind of formal effort to get these guys back on campus once or twice a year? Shouldnt that be just SOP?

Part of what's happening right now is Texas and Florida are riding the momentum of their more recent success. Texas a mere 8-10 years ago didn't have the state locked down... A&M and OU, and many other schools were taking a bunch of kids that the longhorns wanted. But with Mack Brown (who is a great recruiter) and more recently the success that Vince Young delivered, suddenly Texas was the trendy place to be. Same thing with the gators. It wasn't so long ago that FSU and Miami took the top talent in the state of Florida... but then came Spurrier and the championships, and the gators were suddenly on the map. Meyer has sustained that success, and even Zook, being the great recruiter that he was, kept the talent pipeline flowing.

What Texas and Florida both have, in addition to their fertile recruiting grounds... is charismatic and elite recruiters as head coaches - and a more tangible promise that they will win championships (as supported by recent history).

Texas also benefits from Austin being an exceptional place to live. Not hard to convince kids to come to
Austin.

The state of our program just doesn't lend itself to being the "coolest" place to go at this point. We are a "non-factor" in the words of Herbstreit. That just doesn't lend itself to putting yourself on the top of many kid's lists. Win a championship and that will start to change. A more charismatic figurehead would help too. Fortunately for us... we have elite traditioin and facilities, and a great history of putting kids in the NFL. Those things help keep us on the radar.

All are selling points for potential offensive recruits. Problem is, they’ll want to see all the above in action before they pledge their services.
Fair enough. Just don’t wait too long. Fulmer laments the fact that recruiting seems to accelerate with each and every turn of the calendar. Decisions must be made quicker.
That doesn’t play to UT’s strengths as a program with limited in-state talent, which leads us to the one knock on UT’s recruiting efforts to this point. Even with a new offense, it’s hard to figure out why the Vols don’t have one in-state commitment.

read the last sentence. from govols.com

When I get through with exams I might do that.

if you do, please let me know about it. another thing I've always wanted to see is a incoming guy profile. take one a day, it would be an excellent way to feed the football fan's info jones during the summer.

I don't think that his desire to delay the commitment is a poor reflection on Tennessee.

It seems that this kid is a Vol fan, and will likely commit to UT...but, rather than making an emotional decision, he's going to try to make a level-headed, well-informed decision on where to go to school. I applaud that.

If UT's the best place for him, he'll end up on the hill.

If we cant get this kid, then we're in rough shape. In Texas kids are beating down the door to commit to Mack Brown and we cant even get a lifelong Vol to go ahead and pull the trigger.

I guess that's why there are 38 kids from Texas on OU's roster. If a kid from Texas wants to go to a Texas system school and can play football, that is probably the only way most of them can get in due to the 10% rule. In Texas you are only guaranteed a spot in a system school if you graduate in the top 10% of your class, no matter if your class was 50 or 5,000 students.

True. Mack Brown couldn't get Adrian Peterson or Rhett Bomar to stay in Texas.

or it could have something to do with the fact that Texas is freakin' huge state with a huge population. Yes, there are exceptions, but for the most part Texas cherry picks the guys they want.

I would like to think this kid will eventually come around. Maybe he is just going to play it for what its worth and enjoy his visits to other schools. Can't blame him for that. Although, we have lost local kids in the past. This one will be a big loss with our needs on the DL. He sure does seem happy wearing the Auburn stuff.

I just get the feeling, and it's prob just because of the Harrison Smith ordeal, that Hood goes elsewhere.

He does want to play on the defensive side of the ball so you have to think that plays to our advantage.

so he had his picture taken in front of the stadium. somebody needs to point out that it is the only structure of note for about 200 miles. I cant imagine anyone wanting to play there. It is literally in the middle of nowhere.

True. Have you lived in Texas before? I loved it.
I have never lived in Texas (thank god) but have spent a lot of time in Houston, and think it is an asphalt jungle. The only thing I found appealing was the real estate prices. Other than that, you and all the illegals can have it!

Yeah, but who forced him in the Auburn shirt and hat?

As big of a help he would be, we really need to make an in with Knox Cath because they seem to have talent quite often and with Zak Tait next year...

Daniel grew up in vol country and wants to be a vol!

Auburn was first to offer a visit, yes before Tennessee, and visits are like mini vacations, you got to have something to show you were there. He's Tennessee's to lose!
