$1.9 million reserve

what's the expected average reserve?

...which is why $1.9 million as a reserve is "unheard of in the SEC" and a "concern" going forward.

I would imagine that the new athletic center drained the reserve...and after five straight years of falling football revenue, our "savings" account contributions weren't as robust as they could have been with an SEC championship or two.

Just a guess.

UT needs to hit up the big boosters for more millions to get the reserve up to a level consistent with big schools like alabama, florida and georgia

If Alabama is working on upwards of $250m reserve, then the university really doesn't have a choice except to make the biggest hire in school history, or else the program may be done for a generation. D-1, NCAA football is a monster you don't jack around with if you want to stay relevant.

Either they put someone in charge that knows how to hunt, or they're finished for a while. The days of "he has lots of potential" are over for Tennessee. It's simply never been and never will be that kind of athletic program.

Suffice it to say that no one spends money like someone's whose money it isn't. (yeah, read it twice).

With the TV contract money we get this sure seems like gross financial mismanagement to me.

I would tend to agree with this. Let's hope Hart knows how to hunt.

We spent our money. But also Bama's merchandising, BCS championships, television (more appearances), bandwagon fans buying up everything crimson and on and on.

TN also doesn't have an income tax so we can't easily funnel money into UT when the sales tax is less than expected (right now) or simply because we want to invest more in higher education (more money for UT means more money for all programs) -- other states can do cash injections that our state can't because we're running such a strict bare bones budget and always have.

UT is also a system school meaning branches like UTC and UTM get money reserved for UT as a system -- UTK draws from the same pool of money. Of course, UTK draws more because it is the flagship but there are lots of other campuses and schools we have to share with.

In short, a whole lot of reasons.

Wait, if tax rates go up for the 2%, where will they ever come up with extra cash for TN football? They will be broke and on the side of the road....since all of us middle class ppl don't pay taxes, we should tax part of our pay and give it to UT!!! ROCKY TOP! GRUDEN!

Most SEC schools have reserves between 50-100 million, according to Hart. With all the coaching changes we have had, plus lower income due to not being that great, it has taken a toll. There have been a lot of factors to get us that low.

I would guess from the fanbase in ticket sale, concessions, merchandise, etc. possibly. We still get a split of the bowl revenue from all of the SEC programs just like Vandy did all of the years they stunk. Also sounds like Hart is targeting striking a deal for a larger revenue sharing TV contract which could make the difference up as well. While the 1.9 million reserve is a concern, they apparently have a plan in place which goes a long ways in fiscally turning things around fairly quick.
