1 second left and you don't offer any defense?

No, I don't think the second foul shot miss was on purpose, it rolled around the rim, and yes, I believe the players were told to foul after the miss.

So they never intended to guard the inbound. Doesn't seem like a good decision.

Kellie did say they wanted to get Rickea "back into the play".

Wouldn't have mattered if the double dribble had been called or poor JP hits the fts. Do you think she missed the second on purpose? Also, was Jewel supposed to foul?

Also, I believe with Carduso out high, and everyone else out wide, I bet South Carolina's original play was a lob to Carduso, which means Tamari's position left the only option - a long shot out top by Carduso.
Yes Dawn said that but she called her back out when she saw TK down low. Neither of our players reacted to that.

Did you go to the game/melee today? Or already home?

R. Jackson has no basketball knowledge. She just stood there and looked stupid. But, Coach KH is to blame!!!! Put someone on the inbound passer!!!

With Key's limitations on mobility, it wouldn't have been good for TK to follow her out and allow her to run by her for the lob.

Sold my tickets for a nice profit and watched the championship game/brawl in Hi-Definition TV from my couch!

I wonder if @Rooster1 was close to Flau'jae's brother when he jumped the scorer table? His seats yesterday were in the vicinity.

Just did a rewatch, because in my mind we really won the game! That’s the only way I can think about it to cope! Lmao!

But I just noticed, it looked as if Joy motioned to Rickea to pressure the inbound pass but I’m not sure if Rickea was paying attention to her or Kellie, because it looked as if Kellie was motioning something as well! Sorry if this has been mentioned already, I really didn’t read all the way through this thread! Still devastating!

We were covering their high percentage shot risks and the lowest possible risk was Cordusa out high. She made the shot, though, so props to her.

I do see the value of putting someone on the inbound passer, though.
Or, it went in in spite of her horrible miss. (Sorry to harp on this. I'll leave it be now.)

And I would love to see SC get beat by a 16 seed. The arrogance of that team and coach is off the chart and they need to be broke down a level.

"Everyone is a shooter"...You don't leave a shooter open! Sorry Kellie, You did.
No, she didn't. The players did. The number of nitwits who actually believe Kellie told them not to guard the shooter is incredible.
In hindsight, Powell just make your free throws stink!

Or the Ref could have made the double dribble call after the second miss when fulwiley double dribbled all the way down the court.
Every bit of this. The perfect storm of unfortunate events, none really Kellie's fault. This is my final take on it all:

Bottom line, and this is harsh, we lost bc JP missed those fts. Not piling on and I'm sure no one could ever make that poor child feel worse. She will live w this this the rest of her life and I'll bet be an even better person for it some day. I just hope they can get her head back over the break, we need her. And want to support her. Definitely not Kellie's fault.

Fouling in the backcourt w fouls to give is coaching by the book. But Fulwiley had just gotten away w an obvious double dribble and was paniced, about to heave a half courter (which w our luck, would have gone in.) No one could have forseen this, not Kellie's fault.

Rickea was clearly confused btw guarding the inbound and Kamilla, and if anything is on coaching, it's this, esp if Joy was giving confusing info. Kellie said they were "trying to get Rickea back in the play" but if Joy was trying to get her to guard the inbound, that explains alot. You can see Rickea looking at the bench and pointing toward the inbound. Then caught halfway in between.

20/20 hindsight should have called timeout and got it together, but not doing so is also by the book and Dawn said she wouldn't have. The confusion is only marginally Kellie's fault, and actually sounds more like Joy's. Although guarding the inbound seems obvious. Sheesh, I'm confused.

Nothing explains both Rickea and TK growing roots in their spots and not at least running, waving, and shouting in KC's direction in an obvious catch and shoot situation. Unfortunately, this viral video of no one moving has become the defining moment and used to blast poor Kellie. Of course they couldn't risk fouling, but neither veteran player reacted at all when KC caught the ball and it did look bad. But in no way Kellie's fault.

And then, Kamilla pulled an absolute rabbit out of her arse. Credit Dawn for giving her the green light; I think Dawn had actually already conceded the loss and thought "why not'?

We know the rest, and I continue to say poor Kellie Harper is just cursed. Can't think of anyone who deserves a break more.

Once the ball was in Kamilla's hands, it could only be catch and shoot. Both TK and RJ should have at least started in that direction, hands waving etc. Probably wouldn't have mattered since the shot was pure dumb luck. But sadly perception is reality and the fact that neither reacted at all has become an extremely unfortunate viral video that is being used to just pummel those players and poor Kellie. Whose fault it wasn't.

See the extremely cruel drive by post above about Rickea as evidence.

We know the rest, and I continue to say poor Kellie Harper is just cursed. Can't think of anyone who deserves a break more.

What happened at the end of the game was not unique or rare. It wasn't a perfect storm. We had the lead with the other team having the last shot. That happens all the time. Every single player on the court should have known the plan if SC makes or misses that shot. The disaster that unfolded is definitely on Kellie and her staff.

Kellie is the head coach. Her job has a ton of aspects but one of the most important parts is preparing her players for game situations, particularly high stress situations. Her and her staff utterly failed at that, and she should absolutely be fired for it.

Fouling in the backcourt is generally intended to waste time and to keep them on the baseline. Fouling so they can get an inbound at half is a bad idea. Her players should know better than to foul at the half.

You're right that Kellie didn't miss the free throws. After missing the first, the second miss looked intentional to me, but I could be wrong. I think the plan was to make the first and miss the second, but again, I can't prove that. Following the miss anarchy ensued because none of our players were prepared.

If your players are so lost on the court that no one knows who to guard or if there is even a defender on the inbound, that's on coaching. You should practice that situation over and over. These aren't middle school girls. They're high level D1 athletes. Every member of the roster should know how to handle a late game scenario in her sleep. They didn't, and that is on the coaching staff.

The rest of your post is just excuses. Kellie isn't cursed. She should have prepared her players better. She continually fails at major parts of her job, and that was extremely obvious to a national audience on Saturday. I was excited for her hire, but there is no excuse for how poor of a job she's done.

Just a few things on the final play:

- Clearly our strategy was to remove the two best scoring options for South Carolina, the lob or a three-pointer to one of their several great three-point shooters.
- Jackson was confused as to what the coaches were telling her to do. Calling a timeout was definitely a possibility but would have allowed South Carolina to draw up a play.
- Key was exactly where she should have been to prevent the lob. Due to one second being not enough time to dribble or pass, I think she should have tried to closeout but I don't think it actually would have affected the shot as she was too far away.
- Let's not act like we were coming out of a timeout and coach was a able to breakdown every situation for the players.
- At the end of the day, we made them take a shot that had a 2 to 3 percent chance of success. In my opinion, that is not coaching malpractice.

As far as the rest of the game, especially the halftime adjustments, an incredible coaching job and effort by the team ended up getting overshadowed by that final play.

I'm really hoping for this team to be able to get a signature win in the NCAAT.

Maybe it happens all the time, but I don't recall seeing a team just stand near the goal, and offer no defense, and only something that is "you are not going to make a lay up against us. We might move if you try that".
Probably happens all the time?

I think Rickea was confused as to whether the inbounds or the perimeter player She was totally out of the play.

And huge props to JP for gathering herself immediately after the most devastating moment of her basketball life and completely eliminating option 1, Pow Pow in the corner. Just as she had done every time we faced them.

Pow had 4 pts, w 0- 3 on 3 ptrs against us here; had 14 pts but only 2-5 on 3 ptrs at SC, then just 3 pts this time on 1-4 3 pt shooting. In 3 games, mostly JP defending, the nation's leading % 3 pt shooter was 3-12 on 3 prts. That's incredible.

JP has really been so solid for us this season with the exception of a few games/moments. I’m just so impressed by her mental fortitude.

This was not a coach's decision. A couple of players did not react when Kamilla stopped at the arc instead of going to the paint. Also not the coaches fault they missed two free throws that would have clinched the game. KJH actually did a great job today.
EXCEPT that Harper, or any of the other coaches for that matter, could and should have called a time out when they saw the players’ spacing.

It seemed that Harper was yelling instructions to the team just prior to the throw in. I didn’t see her post game interview - is what she said something that was covered?

IMO, IF she was telling someone to cover Cardosa, then double indictment on her for not calling the timeout.
