Considering Saban inherited an LSU team that was coming off 4-7 and 3-8 seasons when he took over LSU... Sounds like you're not giving Saban enough credit. Les Miles best season(s) consist of two losses. He is lucky he even has a championship under his belt.

Saban is a great coach but a terrible person. Miles is a great guy and a solid coach minus his end of game time management issue. Where Miles went wrong was hiring Crowton at OC and not letting him go which in the end might end up to be his downfall.

The coaching at LSU was in horrible shape prior to Saban but the team was still loaded with talent. Actually, Saban only had one year of less than 3 losses, no denying he can turn a team around, for me I would want him about as much as I would want Lame-o, it's just not worth it.

2000 8-4
2001 10-3
2002 8-5
2003 13-1
2004 9-3

For Les it comes down to the offense improving, if they do not improve LSU will be looking at a new direction. Overall, LSU is in a position to bounce back in a big way if there are improvements in that area.

Saban has been gone for along time, there were only a handful of players left in 2007 when we won the NC that were recruited by Saban and probably only a few players that had even been coached by him at all and actually got playing time under him.

The best LSU team was not the 2003 or the 2007 team, it was the 2006 team which would have been playing for the 3rd NC of the decade if it were not for JaMarcus Russell.

Everybody RELAX a little about Copeland....according to austin price and hubbs on TOS, price talked to copeland and he was still on his visit with LSU when that article was written. He reinforced to austin that he has been in communication with VOLS coaches over the weekend, and austin and hubbs say that the vibe from him is that the VOLS may have weathered the storm.
i think we're gonna hold onto copleland.

Good stuff, we need him!

:clapping: great news

Very glad to hear this, I've always wanted Copeland to be a part of this class, especially with our need for DT's.

i don't think Copeland knows right now- I think it is 50/50. My fingers are crossed though.

Just curious..are you guys keeping those uniform changes...the gold replacing the yellow? I thought they look pretty sharp, FWIW.

I think Les Miles (no offense) is a bumbling dolt.

I have no animosity for LSU at all. In fact I loved going to Baton Rouge for a game...so much fun.

That said, Les seems like a good guy, but a really really dumb coach. He would be a fun coach to be around as a player, but his decision making is wretched. He won the NC with Saban's team, and dumb blind luck. He has one of the most talented teams in the country and can do nothing with it.

There was hardly anyone left in 2007 NC team from the days of Saban. Some of his recruits were left like Hester and Doucet but none really played significant time.

There are ton more players left on Alabama from Scula than what was left over Saban at LSU so I guess Saban won on Scula's players?

He started in January of 2005 and won the NC in 2008 - which is the championship game for the 2007 season. That's 2-3 classes of Saban's recruits. The most important classes are arguably your juniors and seniors for a NC team.

Yes, the most important classes consisted of the majority of Saban's recruits. Your team won a NC losing two games, and Les Miles could have easily lost 2-3 more games that same year. He had the most talented team in the country and managed to almost flub it up. Lost to freaking ARKANSAS right before the SEC Championship game!

He got very lucky with that hail marry pass against Auburn...another potential clock management blunder. Shoot we almost beat you that year, and we were not that good...you can thank Ainge for that one.

Hey I think he's a pretty cool guy, and I have a lot of respect for LSU.

Les does not have Gameday brains. Sorry.

Saban hauled in 2 number 1 classes in the country. Back to back.

He won with his talent for the most part, and his teams are well coached and disciplined. Their team is also VERY young. Get used to losing to Bama for a few more years.

Saban is a beast. I hate to admit it, but most everyone would trade in Saban for their coach. Even LSU fans.

No, one class plus redshirts, Saban was gone in early 2005. We only had 13 recruits in 2005 because he left during recruiting season. It's the equivalent of saying Saban won on Scula players. Miles won his 3rd year in, Saban won his 3rd year in at Alabama there is no difference. No doubt Saban is a good coach, no doubt he is a POS also.

LSU fans do not want Saban back anymore than you would want Lame-o back. He is a great coach but a horrible human being.

I think Miles is a good guy and surrounded by good assistants. He's a mediocre coach at best. Could he have won a NC without the talent and legacy that Saban left behind at LSU? No. He'll be a good guy for Michigan when they decide to fire Rich Rod after this season and LSU will move on, probably for the better.

By the way, how did this thread devolve into a LSU/Les Miles debate? What happened to JC Copeland?

Do the math my friend. 2007 class consisted of

2003 (recruited during the 2002 season) signing class - Saban's
2004 (recruited during the 2003 season) signing class - Saban's
2005 (recruited during the 2004 season) signing class - Saban's

2003 class had:
Alley Broussard
Matt Flynn
Keith Zinger
Jonathan Zenon

2004 class
Herman Johnson
Tyson Jackson
Curtis Taylor
Quinn Johnson
Brett Helms

2005 (remember this class was recruited primarily by Saban in 2004) class had:
Trindon Holliday
Ryan Perrilloux

2004 class had
Jacob Hester
Glen Dorsey
Early Doucet
Chevis Jackson
Craig Steltz

Saban's team won that championship game sorry.

See you don't know what you are talking about if you think Saban signed Ryan Perrilloux, Saban was gone my friend and he didn't sign Holliday either... he was gone. Perriloux was a signing day surprise, ended up being a nightmare for us.

I mean you have Brossard in there, Brossard never really did anything after getting hurt in 2007 and I don't even know if he played in 2007.

4 of the top 5 receivers were never recruited nor played for Saban.

4 of the top 5 RB were never recruited nor played for Saban.

Flynn was recruited by Saban but was redshirted and only a played a few series, Hester played about 4 plays a game towards the middle of his freshman year as did doucet. All the rest of the guys you mention never got on the field during Saban;s tenure. Chevis Jackson was a WR and was converted after Saban left. The 2005 class was nearly as bad as the 2002 class.

I guess Saban is working on the house Scula built.

So because some of the kids didn't play much as freshmen or because they red shirted, Saban doesn't get any credit for building a large part of that roster? That's an interesting take on things. I guess someone else on the staff recruited them and then Saban wouldn't let them play because he never really wanted them.

No question LSU talent and culture were built by Saban

But 3 years later guys, the current HC has to get some credit for developing and coaching those players. Are Bama fans claiming that Saban won with Shula's players? Why don't we hear that argument...? Oh right he developed them and coached them not Shula....

I would take Saban back in a second. But..

As long as Miles keeps recruiting like he is, LSU will be a headache every year..a top 10 type team every year..

Miles recruited the #1 class last year, lets see how that class pans out for him...if he gets the chance

I think people like to discount the fact that LSU has depleted of all the qB talent by the spring of 2008.

If nick Saban had our QB's the last 2 years, I highly doubt our record would be much different.. maybe a game or 2? who knows?

I think Nick is the best in the game or one of the best...but one of the reason is, he gets talent piled up

I don't think he is a bad human being, just ruthless at times.

Enough about these arguments/opinions., what do you think Copeland does and why?

I think Copeland sticks with Tennessee. He was one of the first to come out and say that he was still committed as long as the offer was still there from the new staff. I think once he gets home and thinks about it and let the excitement of the official wear off that he'll remember the reasons he committed in the first place.

Who said he didn't recruit some of the players, he did, by the time the NC came around there was probably around dozen left with only about 3 that saw any playing time at all and that was limited during Saban's tenure.

There is no difference between that and Saban winning at Alabama. There is no interesting take.

Matter of fact it was joke in the LSU's lockroom that Saban said they were all his players, even the ones he did recruit said they didn't even know the guy.

Most of those guys are Louisiana boys, most of them were coming to LSU no matter what. The best recruiting he did was Hester because if anyone else had been here they might have not even gave him an offer.

Totally agree with your assessment.

Maybe Les should have some credit for development, but I still contend that he was given a gift of some of the most talented guys in the country.

But there is no excuse now. The entire team is filled with Les' boys, and they are underachieving big time. Yes they are talented, and yes they are underachieving.

As for Saban, the team he won with is VERY young and his playmakers are not Shula's. He hauled in 2 back to back top recruiting classes. No.1 recruiting classes back to back...Saban won the NC with his team. Sorry

If you think Les Miles is equal to a Nick Saban, LSU-SIU....I got some beach front property to sell you in Nebraska. I agree, Saban is a ruthless, calculated SOB. But he's also the best SOB in the business...period. When I say that I hate Bama, I really hate them and wanted them to lose in the BCS Championship Game. But it didn't happen.

Saban is the man, even I can admit that.

As for Copeland...not sure. You guys have a great chance of grabbing the boy. We are shaky at best. You will be getting a baller if you pick him up.

If you think I ever said that I have a bridge to sell you. Actually if you go back and READ you will see I said the opposite of that.

Here let me repeat for like the third time.

Saban is a great coach and a terrible human being, what is the difference between him and Lame-o? Not much.
