'10 JUCO DT David Mahoney

Ok I'm watchin the Colts game and not really processing anything here lol. Please tell me you were being sarcastic before

Tennessee - "Basically, with them, it's the coaching staff, plain and simple. They have a Hall-of-Fame staff that I know could get me to the pros if I went there. At this point, I'd say they are my number one, but because of the SEC requirements for JC players, I might not be able to play there since they require an extra Math and English class. I'm taking those classes right now and I'm doing fine with them, but you never know with admissions people so that might be an issue."

what is it with these juco kids and those classes? the ncaa should level the playing field and have every conference have the same standards regarding those guys.

Would we rather have Mahoney or Whitaker? Im assuming we are not going to land Quarles. So I think Brown, Smith, Copeland, and one more dt should be about it. If Willis stays he will eventually help in the middle. Slightly above avg DT class, land Kelcy and it would be a great dt class. I also heard Calvin Smith may be a olineman in college?

I haven't seen anyone say why. This season he had 40 tackles, 12 TFL, and 8 sacks...

I've seen similar numbers attributed to Mahoney in some Scout.com pieces, but Pierce's official stats show him with just 16 total tackles, 6 TFL, and 4.5 sacks in 10 games. If those are accurate they are not very impressive, IMO.

Pierce has two other DTs (Alex Martinez and Julian Fields) who were named all-conference this year. Still, Mahoney has the strength and size you look for and he reportedly has 15 or more offers, so he obviously has impressed a lot of programs.

It would be nice to have him and John Brown to get two physically mature bodies to throw right in the mix immediately. Is Brown signing soon?

If he is already taking the required courses it sounds like he really really wants to be here and play for this coaching staff. Can't say the same about Bruce Irvin though.

"Tennessee remains number one on my list," Mahoney said. "I am working on my grades. To go to Tennessee you have to have an extra English and extra math class. That's the SEC's rule. I am working to get those requirements done."

"He (Cregg) just wanted to check on my academics and see where I was with everything," Mahoney said. "Coach Orgeron and I talk regularly. He calls me every week and when he doesn't come to the west coast he always sends a coach by the school to check on me and my academics."

We've been on him all year. He's also a position (DT) that we desperately are in need of. I'd say if he gets the grades, he's a Vol.
