guys all this 3-4 talk is wonderful ..seems like a good idea ....

but we have no nose tackle ( mount cody )

the 3 4 is predicated off a monsterous , blocker hoggin' nose that ties up 2-3 blockers . Dan Williams may have been dominany enough ...

3-4 defense without that puts us in the basement .

I know Williamson personally, and he is as good as Pat Willis was at his age with better size. He is a class act and I have never heard him reply to an elder with anything but yes sir and no sir. I also talked with him the other day and I asked if he had been contacted by UTs new staff and he said no. I asked him if he would consider going to UT if he was asked and he said I definitely would consider it! We could do lots worse than this kid, I guarantee it!

If DD implements the 3-4 J.Smith should be jumping up and down with joy.

He is the epitome of the walk up OLB in a 3-4 system...

If the 3-4 is our new defense... I would expect Smith to get some serious playing time next fall.... because it is a new system, we have lb's coming off of knee injuries, he is an ee, and he fits the scheme...

Montori Hughes at NT??

That would be my first ..and only prospect . He looks like an up and coming star ...BUT in the 4-3 where he got alot of man up matchups , he was good but not dominant . Williams would fit but he be gone. The nose has to be a line bender and must demand double and triple blocks , or the whole scheme doesn't work .

Just don't see it as feasible this year . Maybe he will work it in over time until he gets the right guys.

Im hoping we stay in the 4-3.

but Lets see how things shake out once we get a DC and see em line up in spring ball .
Right now it doesnt look like we have a 2 gap NT on the team. our strength appears to be at DE and most of them are 5 and 8 technique kinda guys.

That's my thought. We actually have alot of athletic, but smallish DE's that could be 3-4 outside linebackers. I noticed Monte used the DE's in pass coverage last year. I'd never seen that at UT.

Barry worked with Monte for 5 years. So basically they would just continue the process. Barry has been the name mentioned since Wednesday on other sites. It is now confirmed Dooley has contacted him multiple times so it is all about whether he wants to come here it seems. He has a LB job in the NFL for life he is considered one of the best at that spot. I do not understand over in the other forum folks thinking on what a DC is. They want to hire guys who have no DC exp and coach DL well. I am one who believes not always but most good DCs are LB coaches. Thompson for example is really a D-line coach.

Dooley told Barry he wants to keep running the D Monte was running.

you have too ...it was aggressive , and blitz happy .

The blitz's really takes the pressure off a tired - under subbed D line .

3-4 will work good when you have a great NT and outside backers that can play up or down . We just don't seem to have all the components

Herman Lathers(or Glen Staley if he commits), Nick Reveiz,Savion Frazier, and Greg King at LB. Montori Hughes, Ben Martin, Chris Walker on the Dline, and IDK for the secondary. But that is one solid defense.

Herman Lathers will start next year no matter who else is out there, honestly...

Glen Stanley and Bruce Irvin would've been killer in a 3-4 defense...

I might have had to take back my Herman Lathers comment if we had both of those guys...

jewbaccah,

has there been an offer to Barry? or just contact?

Not sure...Barry was quoted as saying Dooley told him that his name kept coming up in discussions as the top choice with other coaches and he was very interested him.

It sounded just from tone of Barry and article we had offerred in some way maybe not specifics and Barry was considering. This is speculation on my part.

He is the LB coach for the Bucs was DC for a year of Detroit. He worked with Monte for 5-6 years.

Are we for sure going to the 3-4 next year? Everyone keeps talking about it, so I may have missed it. I don't really like that switch given our personnel at this point..

If we hire Barry, then we will still run Monte's D. I've heard that's the main reason Dooley is interested in bringing in Barry. Wouldn't be a bad move IMO, since we wouldn't have to install yet another defensive system and just focus on getting better.

I don't think we'd be as good in Monte's D as we'd be in a bastardized 3-4. We could handle McCluster a heckuva lot better with 4 LBs, I can tell you that much.

It's not quite as important that the nose be like Haoli Ngata in college as it is in the NFL because a good 280lb nose in college can demand double teams whereas in the NFL the nose is gotta be 325lb min.

Am I crazy here?

We have not decided to be in a 3-4...people are just speculating. If Barry comes we will not use a 3-4 IMO.
