Why is Aaron Douglas not mentioned on anyone's list?

Antoine Dodson is another one...

PM Dawn is not rap and is/was actually quite decent to listen to.

Because Dodson is not a rapper...neither is Aaron Douglas for that matter, despite what he may think of himself.

people focus too much on the quality of or breaking down the meaning of rapper's lyrics. if the sound production and beat isn't there 9/10 rap songs will suck regardless if the best writer alive is rapping. the ability to dance to the music is a pretty essential part of hip hop's foundation, so i don't get why so many people are all about these art rappers with basic beats.

i take it you haven't listened to a tribe called quest or digable planets, then?

You should be ashamed that you listed Kid Cudi in that list.

Pharrell is as much of a rapper as he is a skateboarder, dude is a producer who mostly croons and occasionally raps.

Any clown with a mic can jump up and put words together like mad/glad/sad/dad. How about every so often we have a rapper that actually puts a story together? And trust me, REAL hip hop is 70% lyrics and 30% beats/hooks. I don't remember people dancing around to "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" from Public Enemy or "My Melody" by Rakim and those are 2 hip hop classics.

But you hated on KiD CuDi....

Cudi sings about stories? Funny, I thought he rapped about tripping shrooms and dancing.

Yeah, that too. Soundtrack 2 My Life is some good storytelling. Mr. Rager, too. He's not telling stories like "A Boy Named Sue", but he is in his own abstract way.

Yeah the only people I know who like Kid Cudi smoke weed. Which is fine I guess, but if you don't then it doesn't seem like he raps about anything.

One of my best friends I consider to be a student of the hip-hop culture (He's a Jewish kid from LA drawn to urban culture. He studied sociology and got a Phd in criminology). He has never smoked pot, and he thinks KiD CuDi is among the best in the game right now.

CuDi definitely isn't for everybody, though. He does rap a lot about drugs (and some of the songs like Maui Wowie are fun/retarded), but his deeper stuff is why he's my favorite. My favorite track of his, The Prayer, does not mention drugs at all.

See, I only like hearing Cudi when I'm in a club and my BAC is high enough to get half the people in there a DUI.

He's also great in a festival environment. I saw him at 'roo back in '10, and it was hands down the best hip hop show that year.

He's just one of those artists I can't jam to in my truck.

Post the best Kid Cudi song you can find and let me give him another chance.

There are a few that can really give you the wrong impression of him. Day N Night made him an overnight star, but it's one of his weaker songs, IMO.

I know I wasn't a part of this discussion but I got to go with Ras on this one (unless either of these two changes his tune). I just don't get the appeal. Soundtrack to My Life was ok but the Prayer just sounded bad to me. I don't usually ever complain about voice when judging someone in rap but I didn't even want to finish the song bc I thought his voice sounded terrible. Some of the subjects were slightly interesting with what he was trying to talk about but the lyrics just seemed so basic.
