11/8 - Never forget

To me it was 96 memphis. How in the heck do you let a bad memphis team stop you from getting a chance at a nc?
That is the worst loss in my 47 years of life. Not the most embarrassing, but the worst. Followed closely by the LSU loss in the SEC Title Game with a Natty appearance on the line.

Mike Hamilton fired Fulmer Wyoming game week ensuring a losing season so he could justify the coaching change. Otherwise why do it 4 days before the Wyoming game?
I wonder what year two of the Clawson offense would have looked like with Tajh Boyd running it. Don't get me wrong, I like where we are now but I don't think it should have taken nearly 20 years to get here. Hamilton can eat a bag of eggplant emoji's.
There was a standing policy in that era that a loss to South Carolina resulted in a firing a coach the following week.

Majors - 1992
Sanders - 2005
Fulmer - 2008

Brilliant idea to fire the coach with three games left in the season, and let him keep coaching the team. I guess we needed all that time to find Lane Kiffin who was unemployed after being fired by the Raiders.

Well, that was Mike Hamilton for you. The beginning of the crumbling of Castle Vol.

In my opinion, Fulmer and Hamilton should have been gone before the 2008 season even began, just a wholesale absence of leadership at that critical point in time and regrettably, it didn't improve very much over the next 10 years, the university and the athletic department embarked on a piss poor hiring spree, signing long term very expensive contracts to those individuals least suited to carrying out those functions, aight
Yes! He should definitely have been fired after winning 10 games and going to the SECCG in 2007! Started the season ranked 18th in 2008. Why didn’t we fire him right then?!?!

"Hurricane" Hamilton was an awesome fundraiser, but the administrators who elevated him to Director of Men's Athletics were feuding incompetents. It would take more than a decade to overcome the damage done.

It was - bar none - the most pathetic offense I've ever seen in my life. Fulmer had abandoned Dave Clawson's offense (which has worked everywhere else) and we were running something that looked like a bad high school Winged T.

I had to go back and look just to see if our QBs were as bad as I remembered:

14/36 passing for 118 yards
1 TD/2 INTs
-25 yards rushing.

Yep . . . Same thing happened to Will Muschamp at Florida. Apparently South Carolina forgot about that when they hired him.

I honestly didn't mind the Kiffin hire. But the contract was absolute garbage. Hamilton could've pushed for a much higher buyout at that point as our brand was still strong. We officially lost all credibility when he hired Dooley. In my opinion, had he just let Lance Thompson be the interim coach with a clause of "possible head coach in waiting" if he were successful and spent the extra time to hire a quality candidate, we wouldn't be in this mess.

2007 was a strange year given the absolute beatings we took from UF and Bama

Had Hamilton chosen to go that route, Kippy Brown would’ve been the interim coach. In hindsight that should’ve been what took place, but Hamilton was too obsessed with “saving” the 2010 recruiting class. Also didn’t help matters that he tried to dictate to cutcliffe what assistants that he would have to keep if he accepted the job.

Wyoming, Rutgers, Memphis, and North Texas State all have programs that have been around for more than a century. Hell, Rutgers played the first organized game in America. But Georgia State didn't play its first game until 2010. That alone ( to me at least) makes losing to them the most humiliating loss in Tennessee Volunteers history. There was NO EXCUSE for it and by any and all metrics, we should have annihilated them with our second team.
