As much as it pains people...I hope we would NOT kick a kid aside just because last minute some higher ranked kid decides he wants to be a VOL. If the staff wants to speak about character, then they need to display it as well. If we had 1 spot left and Wilder called and asked if CDD would take his LOI...and only DY had not came across the fax machine on NSD..but CDD knew it was coming..I hope he would tell Wilder thanks but no thanks. I think it would go a long way integrity wise for other recruits and parents to see our staff do the right thing. It's not ALL about the 5 star recruit IMO.
Don't worry, we will make room. All these guys will not come here and some will be on academic hold. Reel 'em in, adjust and adapt. OOh rah!!! USMC style.
Ok, so what exactly do you do when your CDD, your recruiting is NOT going so well and your in that 3 star kids Livingroom talking to his parents and trying to get him to really consider coming to Tennessee. His mother looks at you and says, "My only concern is the way you promised those kids last year a spot and then hung them out to dry 2 days before NSD".
Would you tell her sorry but this is a cut throat business and I will recruit over anyone I need to if it benefits me and my job? Maybe you would lie to her and tell her it was a one time thing and would never happen again.
Either way I think your setting yourself up for failure. Just because a kid has another star by his name...does not mean he will equate to another win per year. Character and doing what is right sometimes is the way to go. JMO
You do not say no to a Wilder type player. It was probably nothing more than someone blowing smoke. I have to admit though, rumors make the board interesting.
