three or four years, have him at left guard, AR at LT... Crowder at center, Posey or Fulton at RG, Kerbyson or Stone at RT...the makings of a stellar line (one would hope)

What about James?

I do like your thinking...how about this though:

LT: James / Thomas
LG: Schoefield / Fulton
C: Crowder / Hood
RG: Stone / Posey
RT: Richardson / Kerbyson

Now that's a hella good line

i know he is big but i dont see how this guy is a take atm.

I agree. It's one thing if you take some projects like this when you are recruiting at a high level or if you are into January and losing out on everyone else. You aren't going to build your program back though by taking a class made up mostly of them. No way he is a take at this point with guys like Kerbyson and Richardson having us in their Top 2-3 schools.

I just read the article on GoVolsXtra and that is one big boy! I think he would be an outstanding pickup.

What is he lacking that is making you guys feel that way? He can be coached up...and his size is remarkable.

It seems over half of the board will disagree with you. Just because he is big doesn't make him a great lineman. We're in a great predicament....so many lineman....so few spaces.

I want whoever the coaches want.

I've noticed that...that's why I'm trying to figure out what he's lacking...

i'm in the same boat. I'm not a good O-Line evaluator. I know it has to do with size, but also upper body strength, quick feet and agility, as well as the ability to drive with the legs. Other than that, thats all I know.

But like I always say, I want who the coaches want. If they say he's a good take, they obviously see something that they want.

His game vid that I watched didn't really look all that stellar. Maybe he just out of position and needs to play OG instead of OT. He seemed to get beat several times but as a disclaimer I am also not a good judge of talent either. I was just comparing him against other OL vids that I have seen.

He's definitely out of position and needs to be an OG...but I'm pretty sure that's what we would be recruiting him for so it would work out well for us

His film was not impressive at all. That would explain his current offer list as well. I dont know why some people (not you) try to surgar-coat things by saying he's a guard. They act like you can plug him in an guard and he all of a sudden wouldn't struggle like he did at OT. Either you are a player or you aren't.

I really dont know what to look for when it comes to evaluating O'line talent, but comparing his tape to Seantrel's Jr. film he looks to be alot slower. Not near as athletic but he doesnt quit on the play. He seems to always find someone to hit until the whistle blows. I agree with thunder, if we take him, he needs to be a guard. But...this is why I'm not in the coaching business :)

He definitely plays hard but he does not have good footwork or foot speed at all. That's not something that can be "coached up". I would say his offer list reflects that general opinion.

Both footwork and footspeed can be improved through coaching and S&C... and simply maturing. A 17 year old kid that big may not have fully developed coordination. Late blooming physical maturity is part of the reason so many great NFL OL's come out of "nowhere" schools.

Obviously, if the coaches assess this guy the way MH has then he doesn't merit a commitable offer right now.

I think a lot of offensive line coaches would disagree with you on footwork and footspeed, at least in such simple terms. If it were that simple then just about every "big" offensive lineman in high school football would have all kinds of offers across the board. In my years of coaching one thing college offensive line coaches always consistently told me was that you cannot teach footwork and footspeed.

lololol you do know that Richardson and Kerbyson are Tackles and this guy is a Guard, right?

Yes. I know all of this. I also know they are in good shape with Crowder, already have Posey comitted and signed 2 very good interior OL prospects last year as well as having much better guard prospects still on the board than this guy. If they sign 8 offensive lineman, even if they are projects, then it's not going to be an easy sell with any OL recruits next year. Have to be smart about the guys you take and how you use your schollies. I'm sure the staff understands this, but the fanbase doesn't at all. They want every single guy that pops up on the radar. Just because he "projects" as a guard doesn't mean he'll be any better than he looks at tackle. We'll see but they aren't exactly recruiting against any powerhouses for him.

who said we are signing 8 OL guys? everybody thinks we take 5. 2 OTs, 2 Guards, 1 C and then Clear as a TE/OT/DL option.

there are only 2 guys on the realistic board at Guard better than Austin imo: Walsh and West. both will be tough pulls.

his offer list is solid and most of those offers came after his camp performance a couple weeks ago. sure his offer list isn't what Walsh's is, but it's close to West's and better than any other Guard on our board.

Do you think that one scholarship goes to Austin/West depending who jumps on it first?

Or do we take both no matter what?
