'11 OL Jonah Austin

Do you think that one scholarship goes to Austin/West depending who jumps on it first?

Or do we take both no matter what?

I doubt they take both. They have too many other needs to be taking more than 5 offensive lineman. I would think West is higher on their board than Austin.

nah I don't think we'd take both. got 2 good Guards last year. no need for a huge logjam.

depending on what Austin shows at camp, yes, I think they'd take the first one to commit.

West is the better prospect, but I'm not sure they would slowplay Austin just so they could keep fighting it out with Kentucky and Penn St for him.

i agree with this. i really like west. and no more than 5 OL.

I agree. It's one thing if you take some projects like this when you are recruiting at a high level or if you are into January and losing out on everyone else. You aren't going to build your program back though by taking a class made up mostly of them. No way he is a take at this point with guys like Kerbyson and Richardson having us in their Top 2-3 schools.

I agree with this. I am NEVER a negative poster, but I have to question the staff if this cat commits to the Vols this week. This is the kind of guy that would be a solid take now for the 2010 class, but to take him now especially with all the other OL we are in on is questionable at best.

Leachs offense used major splits, as in distance between offensive linemen before the snap. Requires quickness then, you can develop the foot speed, with drills

I agree as well. He is the kind of recruit that you could slow play, and get a commitment from later in the process. There is really no reason to take a commitment from him now, with 7 months left before signing day. It would make more sense for them to try and get in a better position with some of the more talented guards in this class. If you whiff on those prospects, then you can get a guy like this in January. I'm not convinced that this kid has a commitable offer anyway, so this may be a moot argument.

You could say that about at least 2 players Dooley has already accepted a commitment from.

I'm pretty sure we could get away with slow playing a guy who has 0 other offers, or whose 2nd best offer is Nevada.

i would cite Kiffin's JUCO commits having ZERO other offers period, but I don't want you to go into multiple pages defending him like usual so I'll just let it slide.

Problem is there aren't many good guards in this class, plus we aren't in on many either. Not to mention, we aren't really in a position to be able to pick and choose right now.

On another note, I don't want this guy to have a commit after the camp anymore than most of the people on here. But, I will stay optimistic about some of these "project" players some of you like to refer to them as because they have a whole season ahead of them to focus on development.

I have mixed feelings about this guy. He has great size, probably from a good divison of high school ball, plays in LA, but neither LSU nor Ole Miss have offered. LSU probably didn't offer because they are set on the OL for this class. I'd like to see how this plays out.

In post #62 you seemed to like him.

Really would rather have Cody Robinson. I would love to see UT land plenty of in state kids this year. Richardson, King, Kerbyson, Crowder, Downs, Clear, Dunnaway, Robinson, D. Young. We have been hurt by passing on TN guys because they are not highly rated. Alabama and UGA have gotten some highly rated guys from in the state before, but many under the radar guys have left TN and been starters also. I recall us not recruiting several in state linemen in the last 6-7 years that are now in the NFL. Clabo from Farragut and Reynolds from Carter are two terrible misses from our back yard, while our o-line hasn't been upper tier for several years.

I was just being optimistic. You know, supporting our staff if they really wanted him. Having faith they can turn "project" players into good players down the road. Now that it was cleared up, I don't think there is anything to argue.
