12/14/13 Huge Day

He was on that team but I was only 7 then. Chris did help coach my middle school team in the '80s.
Isn't he a lawyer now?
One of my sons played in the 80s. 2nd or 3rd string guard. Memory's not good. Nickname JC.

I'm not sure if he's a lawyer or not. I know he owns an insurance business in LC.

I graduated from HS in 1990. I lived in LC until '89 when our family moved to NC. I probably know your son.

Since WSU does not have football, we are free agents when it comes to college football. I am frequently asked who I want to win when KU and KSU play and I always replay, "I hope they both lose."

I've always had a ton of respect of Tennessee football. It seems to me that along with Michigan, they were getting 90-100K fans at home games long before all of the other schools added enough seats to compete. It was great when The Vols won the 98 championship. I wish they would have won more. Who could not root for the Vols and Manning in all of those classic battles with Florida?

I think WSU fans also have respect for TN fans b/c they've treated WSU with respect, even if you think TN will win. There are many KU and KSU fans who don't do that. (some do).

There is another TN-WSU connection. Phillip Fulmer was an assistant at WSU in the 1970s, along with Jimmie Johnson and others. I believe that Fulmer remained friends with baseball coach Gene Stephenson.

GS was let go for a couple of reasons: off the field and on the field performance. He was one of the highest paid baseball coaches in the country and was getting 2nd or 3rd in the Missouri Valley and but for winning the MVC tourney this year, WSU would have been left out of the NCAA for the fourth year in a row. The off the field wasn't terrible, but it was enough in addition to not making the NCAA to cause the contract not to be renewed. (you can google it)

Some said he was being held to an unfair standard they he helped created (Six CWS and 1 Natl championship b/t 88 and 96). That is crap in my view. Making one NCAA tourney in four years? It was kind of a Bobbie Bowden situation.

Sorry for the long post and good luck Saturday.

Welcome to the board. :hi: I think we're all hoping for a competitive, energetic and injury-free game. Should be a fun game to watch. Cheers!

I would echo much of what PrvLamb had to offer about baseball.

There are certainly (at least) 2 sides to the Gene thing. Many wanted him to stay as long as he wanted because he earned it. I couldn't argue with them, I understood that point of view.

To me, the program is always bigger than the man leading it. Gene got tired, and it showed, especially in recruiting but also in the way he got the most out of his players, or recently, more how he didn't get the most, and how he couldn't because kids are different.

I believe we're a few months from finding out under our new HC, Todd Butler, that kids are mostly the same and the leadership is new.

Gene deserves to have the baseball complex named after him, and treated like royalty. But the change went down poorly, and in my opinion, was entirely Gene's fault. It was unfortunate and sad in many ways and (somewhat) tarnished a fantastic and hall of fame career.

A tough one on the road will earn some respect. The team is beginning to jell. Go Vols.

Getting antsy, can't wait for this game.

I'm ready for it too man. Hopefully the players are just as pumped as we are, especially Stokes. When he plays to his abilities he creates opportunities for us offensively. It helps to create good looks for our guards when he is owning the paint rebounding and scoring wise.

If Maymon and Stokes play well and stay out of foul trouble I think we should take this one, which would be a huge for us moving forward.

I'm also interested to see how CCM manages the rotation.

...this is biggest game for coach martin...similar to bruce pearl going to texas.big blowout upset with chris lofton...if tennessee losses big may be on road to nit and new coach. If tennessee wins, martin may have secured job. If he losses this month to wichita state, virginia and nc state...even 2 out of three.. I think he is done after this year.. Nit bound....and martin the new jerry green..tennessee has been really bad road team and better have quick start at wichita state or could be very ugly

A loss tomorrow isn't make or break. But it makes the rest of the OOC games a must win and then we need to only lose a couple during SEC play. But we do need a big OOC win, or we need Xavier and Wake Forest to really do well.

Yup. Like I've said, really need to go 5-1 (or better) to finish our OOC schedule.
