Close enough.

We want to be high enough that we're not dependent on higher teams losing to make room for us on our way to the top (or near enough to get to Atlanta and into the playoffs).

#10 to #12 range will get us there. That's plenty high enough. Now it's up to the lads on the field and our coaches on the sideline to get the rest of the way.

Go Vols!

We started 1998 ranked 10, so yes I agree with your 10 - 12 range comment; I just don't understand how essentially the same UT team that won the Orange Bowl is ranked behind essentially the same Clemson team that lost the Orange Bowl... there are other head scratchers too: Washington, Penn St., Tx, LSU, Michigan (lost a lot), would include FSU here as well, but they're in the ACC and after their opener with LSU the schedule really softens up for them.

Is that and the bama/tx game the only first week matchups of teams ahead of us?

Personally I would rather be unranked, but I think the perception here is that we lost a great deal at QB and people are under estimating Joe.

I think that Joe has a lot to prove, but at this point I do believe in him and think that we could have another great season in front of us.
Joe won the Orange Bowl and MVP. I think it's Clemson QB that has a lot to prove

I'm convinced that people vote for Texas in preseason polls just because it's easy to find on a map. If ever there was a team that should be in the "show me" category.
The people that vote on this stuff are the same ones that vote on heisman. Its been said alot, Some voters dont even watch football.

Voting polls are buena por nada. The only polls that should count for anything, including the playoffs, are polls that take strength of schedule into consideration.

Preseason polls SUCK. They create bias that is hard to change. GA will be #1 the entire season with that lame assed schedule
Agree, they will never change but I’d like to see them do no rankings until about 4 games into the season

The Michael Penix Jr. factor
Dear Lord is that guy still playing...or even able to play...seems like he was recruited by Jones, went to Indiana for what seemed like 5 years, and has been at Washington for like 3 years now.

Guess that's what a Covid year plus multiple years of medical redshirts will get you...dude has to be oldest guy in college football this year.
