'12 TN ATH Sheldon Dawson

Dawson said Ole Miss and Cincinnati “definitely” are recruiting him as a running back, the position he would prefer to play in college.

“Some look at me as a defensive back, and some look at me as a running back,” he said. “I’m more interested in playing running back, as of now. But it might change as I go visit a couple more colleges. It just all depends on how I feel or how it goes when I get down to the camps.”

He said Tennessee has expressed interest in using him at both running back and defensive back. But he said he believes the Vols are recruiting him as a defensive back, which “kind of does” affect his opinion of them.

“I like it all — the history, the background,” Dawson said. “I have some family that graduated from Tennessee. I just like Tennessee all around. It’s still not out of the state. I’m still close to family. I’m not that far (away). ... Tennessee, they’re outstanding. I love Tennessee.

“They’re recruiting me as a DB. I’m not sure that I want to play DB yet, but they’re still sticking out.”

Will be here for camp...

Supposedly will be making a decision soon after his visit to UT in late July. Wants to play RB in college, but is open to CB as well. Has been favoring Ole Miss, but hopefully that changes after his UT visit.

"They've been recruiting me hard," Dawson said. "I already have an offer from them. I got it towards the end of last season. I don't really know that much about the school, but I know that they're a rich academic and sports school."
"They're recruiting as me either, but I'm not sure yet. Coach Baggett has told me I could play either, but I think they want me for corner," Dawson said. "I'd love to play offense in college, but I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet."
"I'm pretty wide open at the moment. Only time will tell. But, I think I'm going to have things wrapped up after, probably around the time after I leave the Tennessee camp. But, I'm not sure yet," Dawson said.

The more of Dawson's highlights I watch, the more I like the idea of him being a Vol. He is very, very fast and would be a great ATH at UT. I think he would be a great DB.

I could take that quote two ways. Either he's already sold on another school and just wants to give Tennessee a shot, or he wants Tennessee to impress him enough to commit while he's there.

That's what I got from the quote as well.

Ole Miss would be the school he is already impressed with. They are the favorites. His good friend and teammate Jaylen Walton is already committed there so there is definitely pressure for him to go there.

However, it seems he has genuine interest in UT and has many good things to say about UT. UT needs to make sure to make Dawson feel welcome at the camp. Make him know he is a priority for the 2011 class.

Truly explosive athlete. Rushed for 1,108 yards and 14 TDs on only 53 carries. 21 yards a carry. That is very impressive. Also 3.8 shuttle time is elite.

Good assessment, IMO.

I have felt for a while that Dawson would end up at Ole Miss. Looks like TN will have one last chance to sway this kid otherwise. His teammate and a some other Memphis kids already being verbals to Ole Miss will not help one bit, IMO.

I do not see him being on the offensive side of the ball at either school.

Also rumored to possibly be the #1 ranked TN player by 247.

In my opinion, he is the best player in the state this year. Very underrated and under-appreciated thus far. I would love to have the kid as an athlete, then see exactly where he fits best -- I suspect CB will be his best spot though.

I think your first thought is probably the correct one. He's a heavy lean to Ole Miss but if UT can really wow him, and make him believe he can play RB, then it could sway him to UT. Otherwise he'll commit to Ole Miss after UT's camp. JMO

short term, yes playing RB would be cool but in the long run playing CB will get him alot closer to the $$$

He could be 1 of the 4 they hope to land. Alot easier to take 4 backs in a class if you plan to slide 1-2 to another position (DB) when they see the depth at RB and want to get playing time.

Ole Miss/Tennessee battle, I could see him being blown away at the UT camp & committing right after if the staff allows him too.

I don't think he would commit on the spot. He may be impressed though. I see this dragging out for a while. Most recruits wait to see how teams play during the season to finalize and solidify their decision. I don't think he's an exception. If you building it, they will come.

This will not drag out. I don't know where you get that from. Dawson wants this over with before his Snr. year. Every statement you make is incorrect.

He's a HS RB but he'll be a very good college CB. Hope he's not hell bent on playing RB. He needs to line up on the edge for us here at UT.
