'13 JUCO DB Riyahd Jones (UT commit 12/21/12)

Potential for this guy to start at corner right away .Big Plus ! just from watching this guys footwork and backpedal speed tells me he could be a great cover guy . I like this offer.

Looks like he started out good in the Spring and got worse as the season went on. Coaching by GCCC?

If there is one thing this staff can do is teach. Guys like Jones are going to learn proper technique, and how to be a good corner. We can afford a few risks like this.

Maybe so since we need db's but I don't like taking juco guys that aren't great players. They only have 2 years so they have to be able to play right away. Just not sure this is an upgrade from what we have. CBJ know's better then me though. I do think he has a good upside. I'm a bit jaded on my opinion based on Riyahd having to sign with Georgia Southern out of high school.

I hope two years has changed the man. If this is 2014, this guy would not be a take.

From ESPN:

(Done for the Class of 2013) Jones displays the foot quickness, playing speed and toughness needed to defend against the run and pass as a defensive back. He has the size and athleticism for the cornerback position at the major level of competition. He demonstrates good balance when tackling in space. Although we see the willingness to wrap up ball carriers, he will roll tackle on occasion. Regardless, his athleticism and toughness should allow him to do a variety of jobs on special teams. (He has a blocked field goal off the edge which he returned for a touchdown in junior college.) He is efficient reading the quarterback with good key and diagnosis skills. He is quick to react and defend against the run and pass. He displays the ability to take on and defeat stalk blockers when forcing the run on the perimeter. He is effective playing both zone and man coverage. He does a good job playing rolled up Cover 2, showing the ability to be disruptive and still react to the quarterback. He displays good balance and quick feet when backpedaling. He can plant and break on underneath throws, creating a collision point with quite a few pass break ups to his credit. However there is the need to develop interception skills. We like his ability to play in tight spaces as well his ability to open the hips, turn and run with outside speed. He is effective leveraging receivers to the sideline but must improve his ability to get the head around and locate deep throws. He is a tough customer who doesn't sit back and just make tackles. Instead, he is willing to read and attack the football. Jones' toughness and athleticism should provide immediate depth with the potential to see early situational playing time.

(Done for the Class of 2011 as an athlete) Jones is an athletic skill prospect who could get recruited on either side of the ball. We feel at the next level it will most likely be defensive back; corner to start and potentially safety if he continues to physically develop. As a corner he brings good height, length, speed and ball skills to the perimeter. Very athletic and comfortable around the football in the air. Speed appears more straight-lined but overall he's is fluid and agile athlete who should be able to provide favorable matchups in off-man coverages. Will need to improve upper-body strength but has the wiry frame and the length to develop there. Our main concern is his lack of great top-end speed when matched up in man-to-man schemes at the major college level as well as his marginal explosiveness driving on the ball in underneath zone schemes. Good range, athleticism and ball skills are his key attributes. Offensively, he catches most balls thrown to him showing good body control and hand-eye. Can move the chains after the catch with a good combination of quickness and wiry strength eluding tacklers. Needs some route running polish and his ability to separate out of his breaks and after the catch are concerns as well. Overall, Jones is still somewhat of sleeper in this athlete class with the competitiveness, natural athleticism and versatility he possesses.

Um.....isnt that a violation??? :ermm: :ermm:

If he was just a commitment, then yes. But he signed a JUCO letter of intent so it’s like an NLI and now CBJ can talk about him all he wants. The kid’s officially a Vol.
