'13 JUCO DB Riyahd Jones (UT commit 12/21/12)

Hey Nick, I think this is valuable at least with the nuanced disclaimers. I'm with you; I hope Blair comes on skrong in the fall, but right now he seems to be a disappointment. Nice work.

How is he a disappointment? Because he is still getting in shape? You arm chair athletes are funny, but not funny in a good way.

The interesting thing about Blair has been that no one in the media seems to think that he doesn't have the talent to be successful.

By all accounts, he is having trouble transitioning from the JUCO game mentally and from a conditioning standpoint. The summer will be huge for Blair. I think a lot of people who have been around practice think he will still be your day 1 starter.

long ways to go til gametime. everything is not as bad as it seems and its also not as good as it seems. let them keep developing.no reason to freak out in early April. The O line takes time. its a unit not an individual skill position.

No one claimed to be an athlete; surely you can admit that expectations were high that he would "plug right in" to the OL. If he isn't yet meeting expectations, then his performance is disappointing. I'm fully hoping he will knock our socks off soon. Don't read my stating of the facts as negativity. Thanks!

Blair is the perfect example of why being an EE is so important for JUCO's. Takes a little while to make that transition to big boy ball, get in better shape, and be ready to start. I think Blair is going to be fine come game time, he's just making those adjustments.

Yes, hard to judge until fall camp. If he's still out of shape and sucking wind then, well that would be the time to be concerned.

I've removed Blair and VP from my list, since my intention was to show what has been proven already. I just threw them on the list last second, based in what we have seen so far, thinking the following statements would clarify what I meant, but some still dont seem to jive, so no worries :hi:

As for Sentimore vs Couch, Sentmore's career totals were 18 tackles at TN. 1.5 tackles per game is not anywhere close to acceptable for a DE. He also loses points for inexplicably declaring for the draft. He probably never even entered a UT classroom. This is coming from a player who some thought was "one of the best DL in the nation"

Couch, as a DT averaged 3 tackles per game. He didn't even approach his 5* rating, but he also had his senior year taken away.

Both players disappointed. You may categorize them how you'd like

The following from Evan Woodbery is what I was basing my "disappointing" evaluation on:

Offensive tackle Dontavius Blair (below) is a 6-foot-8 giant who the Vols are hoping will lock down one of the five vacancies on the offensive line this spring.

From here.

Dooley was reaching with Sentimore, just like Phillips, Autrey who does not even start of Miss St. Its just shows how bad he was in looking at talent on the DL

Autry had 16 TFL and 6 sacks in two seasons. Probably would have been our most productive DL.

That is sad for our DL

I don't get calling a player disappointing based on spring evaluations. Will he be remembered as having a disappointing start if he has a good fall camp and locks down the starting LT spot in every game for the rest of his career? No. The only thing he could do in spring to warrant that is to start getting in trouble off the field.

Still plenty of time to turn this around during the summer.

I agree completely. I was just trying to agree with Nick that it seems like he came out of the gate slower than expected. I'm an optimistic guy, so I'm looking forward to the progress.

JUCO linemen are typically slow to adjust. Doug Matthews was talking about it this past weekend. According to his research/experience it takes most until about halfway through the season until they hit their stride. Let's hope, being an EE, Blair pulls it together before then.

Exactly. Which is why almost all of the JUCO's Butch recruits are EE's. You want them to work out their adjustment period in the spring/summer, not fall.

I don't think the issue with Couch or Sentimore disappointing had anything to do with being a juco - they were still our best Dlinemen - so they were better than any of the high school guys

and how many guys in that 3 year span didnt disappoint on defense based on Nick's definition of disappointment

A lot of Couch's and Sentimore's potential was wasted on Dooley level coaching, IMO.

How is that Korver kid from Virginia making out at Bama?

that is exactly what i was getting at - agree 100%

both showed some good flashes and with good coaching I think both and our defense overall would have been much more productive

look how much AJ's play improved this year - he was no better year 2 than year 1 - struggled a lot despite the high tackle numbers and then as this year went on he just got better and better and better

i'd say those 2 would have done the same under some decent coaching
