'14 AL LB Gavin Bryant (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Butch isn't playing games men. He is stacking the def and has playmakers in line to get here.

This is going to be fun. I will never take the good years for granted.

Zero chance he starts over AJ. With Jakob Johnson being an EE, he has a better shot at being AJ's backup as well.

Its not Zero because thats impossible. Also Jakob is awesome but hes played football for how long now? Its more likely he is a project that an immediate contributor at LB, however its still POSSIBLE...like i said for Bryant being POSSIBLE

People keep saying Jakob Johnson hasn't played football for long, that's not true. Yes, he's only played in America for one season but he played FB in Germany.

There is an extremely close to zero percent chance any LB will start over AJ and Maggitt. Their experience and talent will be invaluable this year.

I agree. The bigger competition will be for that 3rd LB spot. JRM and the new guys will fight that one out, looking forward to hearing the reports.

I think Jakob will serve as a bit of an understudy to AJ and get PT as games are decided (same with Mouhon). The other guys I expect to be in the mix for outside spots. Pretty excited about our LB situation going forward.

+1

AJ is a good LB and his spot won't be threatened IMO. However, there are packages/situations where he is a liability.

This incoming LB corp will hopefully help alleviate those situations. Pumped to have some capable depth.

Do not shortchange Justin King. He is very athletic and played LB in HS. He has spent a year making the conversion and has the size and speed to do it well. I see him backing AJ before a freshman gets the job.

We're bringing in an outstanding group of LB, but Weatherd and Bates will be extremely hard to keep off the field. I don't think the others are as field ready.

I could see Maggitt moving to DE, and JRM, AJ, and Weathered as the starting LB core.

Yep, but Maggitt will still play some LB, probably. Also depends on how quickly JRM and Weathered pick up the defense, but I think this would be ideally what the coaches want to happen.

I could be wrong, but I personally dont see King being much of a factor. I really think there will be a couple of true freshman in the two deep at LB.

There were some rumors that he would be one of the guys that end up leaving the program.

The VQ guys said that he had a lot of effort issues in 2013.

still voting JRM as the third LB.

I could see that as well.

When it comes to a 2 deep I think it will look something like this...

Maggitt, AJ, JRM as the starters...

Weatherd, Bates, and then one of Bryant/Mouhon/Johnson.

It's amazing how different (for the better) the LB unit will look depth-wise because of one single recruiting class. It looks better than it has in at least 5-6 years.

What an upgrade. There was a good chance, and we all feared that we were going to be very inexperienced and lean at LB this year. Almost the exact opposite.

And not only that but Propst, Brewer, Sapp, Harris and Crump will be replaced with Bryant, Bates, Johnson, Weatherd and Mouhon. Quite the talent upgrade in just one class.

Those rumors are still out there. I think there will still be a good amount of turnover among the current roster in the coming months.

Unbelievable upgrade in talent. Quite honestly you are going from 5 guys who dont have SEC level talent to 5 guys who have upper level SEC talent.

LB is the least of my concerns on defense. I'm concerned about the CB spot opposite Sutton, who is our NB, and hoping our safeties take better angles. Then on a DL I'm concerned about closing up the middle (I think we'll be fine on the outside).

I am often wrong but I think expecting these incoming kids...especially on the defensive side....to contribute to a high level will be setting them up to fail....They all need to get stronger and learn defense at the collegiate level...granted...they may be outstanding and ahead of the norm but having followed this game for 40 years RARELY do you see a Clowney at SC type etc. that's game ready on defense their freshman year, especially playing in the box...Man I hope I'm wrong again. But I just don't want to over expect and be disappointed..
